Featured on the Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band album Stranger in Town, the tender ballad showcased a vulnerable side of the heartland rocker and became one of his most memorable hits. The song later returned to the charts via a pop duet version recorded by Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton.
Seger once revealed that “We’ve Got Tonite” was inspired by a scene from The Sting, which was the highest-grossing film of 1974, per American Film Institute. In a classic scene from the film, Robert Redfordseduces a waitress (Dimitra Arliss) by telling her it’s two in the morning and he doesn’t know anyone else in town.
Seger’s “You’ve Got Tonite” became a soft rock radio staple in the late 1970s, peaking at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1979. Less than five years later, the song got a second wind on the charts, via the duet remake recorded by Rogers and Easton. Released as “We’ve Got Tonight,” the duo’s 1983 pop duet went to No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Hot Country chart.
"We went over to their offices, and they played it for me,” Seger revealed in the 1983 interview. “I said it sounds like a hit, but to me, it sounds like the kind of thing my mom would like. It's a little bit Vegasy and heavy on the syrup, but I think Kenny did a good job. It's actually kind of soulful for those two."
