ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester native, Lamar Lovelace will play pro basketball in the Irish Super League starting in September.
“No. This is going to be my first time over there,” Lovelace said when asked if he had ever been to Ireland.
EXTENDED INTERVIEWS: Lamar Lovelace and Tom VolkLovelace, who played high school basketball at Northeast College Prep, bounced between SUNY Niagara, a school in Nebraska, and Fredonia in college, before wrapping up his college career with a storybook ending at Keuka.
“Basically coach tells me, I have the keys. He wants me to be the driver of the ship, so I’m just ready,” Lovelace said.
That’s similar to what happened during his final year of college basketball at Keuka. Head coach Tom Volk said he knew Lovelace was special from day one.
“First day classes, he got here and the guys played pickup, and they’re like, yeah, he’s really good. And I was like, okay, good,” Volk said.
In his only season with the Wolves, Lovelace set a single-season program and Empire Eight record with 636 points. He also broke the single-game record with 41 points against Russell Sage.
“And I got done with the game. And, Jimmy [Habecker], our SID, was like he just broke the school scoring record,” Volk said.
Lovelace capped his time at Keuka by leading the seven-seed Wolves to a Cinderella run through the conference tournament.
“First one in school history,” Lovelace said.
When asked who comes to mind when he thinks of his own game, Lovelace pointed to an NBA star.
“Shai Gilgeous-Alexander,” Lovelace said.
“I’d say like SGA where he’s he’s smooth with his his dribbling and he’s getting to like mid-range jump shots. But he can also hit the three and can get to the rim,” Volk said.
Lovelace said his journey to professional basketball wasn’t always easy.
“There’s been multiple times I could have just stopped playing ball and just worked a nine-to-five. But yeah, I’m just happy I kept going with it,” Lovelace said.
Volk believes Lovelace’s career is just getting started.
“I think once he gets over there and showcases what he can do, he can keep climbing levels while he’s there,” Volk said.
“Make a name for yourself. And I just want to have a long, healthy career,” Lovelace said.
The Wolves won their first Empire Eight championship this year and nearly beat defending national champions Trinity in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament.
