The dirty tricks looked like they were to no avail. England were almost there. But Argentina are world champions for a reason.
Six out of six in World Cup semi-finals for the South Americans, who love nothing more than beating the English at their own game. The manner of the victory, against their greatest footballing enemy, could not have been any sweeter.
With this support behind them, and that secular God still doing the business on the pitch, another world title beckons.
Argentina player ratings
Emi Martinez – 6
Did not have a great deal to do and had no chance with the goal. Stayed out of most of the dirty tricks, too, which is unusual for him.
Nahuel Molina – 6
Lost Anthony Gordon for England’s goal, but the run was so impressive it was hard to track. Did not get forward well enough when given the opportunity.
Lisandro Martinez – 6
As Manchester United supporters will attest to, Lisandro Martinez loves these kinds of encounters. Not his usual composed self on the ball, however.
Cristian Romero – 7
Showed incredible guile in his own penalty area in the second half to get out of a tight spot. Timed some tackles to perfection.
Nicolas Tagliafico – 6
Another who left his foot in readily, but could not get close enough to Morgan Rogers for England’s goal.
Leandro Parades – 7
Screened the back four with the verve and passion that belied his advancing years. His experience was a vital as anything else on the pitch.
Giuliano Simeone – 6
The game needed a Simeone on there. Did not really get involved enough in attacking areas from some promising positions.
Enzo Fernandez – 7
Had plenty of sighters before finally getting one right, arrowing a sumptuous strike into the net to equalise late on. That is what he is capable of, in moments.
Alexis Mac Allister – 7
Unfortunate to not get on the scoresheet himself. Came alive late on, and was crucial to keeping England penned in.
Julian Alvarez – 6
Had the first shot on target but did not really offer the kind of threat he can. To his credit, he never stopped plugging away.
Lionel Messi – 8
Lost possession 15 times in first half, but played a crucial part in the incredible late turnaround. Two assists, with the cross for Lautaro Martinez’s winner sublime in the extreme.
Subs:
Nicolas Otamendi – 7
Vital experience at the back to see the win out
Gonzalo Montiel – 6
Kept relentless late attacks coming.
Nicolas Gonzalez – 6
Continued to protect the backline well.
Rodrigo de Paul – 6
Added some vital energy at the right time.
Lautaro Martinez – 7
The hero. What a talent to come off the bench. One chance, one goal.
England player ratings
Jordan Pickford – 7
That save from Nico Gonzalez in the second half felt like a game-changing moment – but Argentina had other ideas. Not at fault for the goals, he did almost everything he could to repel the blue wave.
Reece James – 5
We said it was a huge gamble to take him and so it proved. He looked rusty after recovering from injury and inevitably, he broke down in the second half and forced England into a hasty reshuffle.
John Stones – 6
Can we question the wisdom of bringing a player who had played so little club football? This was not the authorative Stones of old in America and he just couldn’t marshall the defensive display we needed.
Marc Guehi – 6
Nothing more than OK when Argentina started to step on the gas. He’s been iffy at times this summer and didn’t manage to wrestle back any sort of defensive control.
Djed Spence – 7
What a tournament he is having. From right-back scapegoat a few weeks ago to a world class left-back display, with one of the best sliding challenges in England’s World Cup history to stop Giuliano Simeone.
Declan Rice – 5
England’s midfield control has been missing in the last couple of games and you can probably track that back to Rice’s sickness bug. He didn’t look himself here, tiring visibly by the end.
Elliot Anderson – 6
Looked like it was going to be his night when he got control of Lionel Messi in the first half but midfield control ebbed. He will come again.
Morgan Rogers – 6
Tuchel said that it was coaching intuition to pick him but the call to bring Rogers didn’t really pay off. He supplied the cross for Gordon’s goal but didn’t get much change from Argentina’s defence.
Jude Bellingham – 6
One brilliant run was the sum total of his contribution going forward and that is why England lost here. They have relied on his brilliance but Argentina nullified him completely.
Anthony Gordon – 8
With Bellingham and Kane quietened he was England’s biggest attacking threat – and what a goal he scored. Morgan Rogers’ cross was just perfect but Gordon’s run and finish was elite.
Harry Kane – 5
It is not a good sign when Kane’s best work is done around his own penalty area. He got through an incredible amount of defensive work but his attacking impact was virtually nil.
