Chicago officials shut down a long-standing corner diner in the city’s Lakeview neighborhood after cockroaches and several other violations were found during a health department inspection, according to city data.
A neon green sign that reads “license suspended” was posted on the doors to Stella’s Diner, located at 3042 N. Broadway, after the popular breakfast establishment failed two inspections by public health officials.
During a late June inspection of the diner that’s been in Chicago since 1962, Chicago Department of Public Health inspectors identified several violations and cited the owners after two live cockroaches and over 50 trapped roaches and roach carcasses were found.
Inspectors also noted violations related to utensil storage, freezer conditions, cleanliness of the microwave, grease buildup on cooking equipment, walls and floors, and holes in walls and the ceiling. A priority foundation citation was issued by the city that ordered management to treat for pests and remove the dead roaches.
When inspectors came back on July 9, six live roaches were found in the prep, dish and storage areas of the diner. Inspectors also found a gap at the bottom of two exits, issues with wastewater disposal, damaged floors, accumulation on bathroom vents, in addition to previously identified issues that had not been repaired.
City records show Stella’s Diner has failed inspections in the past, including in May 2025 when dozens of rat droppings were found in the basement and in Dec. 2024 when both rat droppings and a pair of live cockroaches, in addition to other violations in both instances.
