“It’s been one miracle after another, from the day of the stroke until today,” Martínez said Tuesday (July 14). “He has a tremendous will to live; he has shown incredible inner strength. The doctors are surprised by everything he has overcome, from the stroke itself to the complications that have arisen, and by how favorably he is recovering.”
The 66-year-old guitarist was rushed to a hospital in Mexico City on May 19 after suffering a stroke, according to a statement issued by his family. Last week, nearly two months later, he was discharged and is now recovering at home.
“The doctors decided to send him home to avoid a hospital-acquired infection,” Martinez said. “They discharged him to protect him; he was no longer in a coma, he was no longer intubated. He is now receiving various therapies so he can continue to improve. He had many health complications, but he is getting better and can now eat on his own.”
Marcovich had previously faced other health complications. In 2010, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent surgery. In 2022, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Martínez said that she and their two children, Béla and Diego Marcovich, have gone through very difficult times as a family since the musician’s recent stroke. But she expressed gratitude for the many messages of love and solidarity they have received through social media and phone calls from colleagues, friends and followers of the famed guitarist and producer, both inside and outside Mexico.
“His musical legacy lives in the hearts of so many people,” Martínez said. “Now many young people are discovering Alejandro’s enormous contribution to an essential part of rock music in Mexico.”
Marcovich was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1960, but has lived in Mexico since the 1970s, when his family went into exile there following the 1976 coup d’état. He was a member of Caifanes from 1989 to 1995, and before that, of Las Insólitas Imágenes de Aurora. Due to disputes and irreconcilable differences between the guitarist and vocalist Saúl Hernández, the band broke up, but in 2011, it staged its historic reunion.
Marcovich was guitarist, arranger and coproducer on some of Caifanes’ most emblematic albums, including El Nervio del Volcán (1994), which spawned the hit single “Aquí No Es Así,” recently embraced as the unofficial anthem of the historic Mexico vs. England match on July 5 in the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup held in Mexico City.
Considered the most legendary and influential band in Mexico’s rock scene, with classics such as “La Negra Tomasa” and “Mátenme Porque Me Muero,” Caifanes was ranked this year by Billboard in the top 10 of the 50 Best Latin Rock Bands of All Time, at No. 7.
