A 15-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy are facing charges after their desire to be in a relationship led them to execute five members of the girl’s family and wound two others over the weekend, a relative and authorities said.

The 15-year-old girl, who authorities have not named, and 16-year-old Ja’ymier Davis were both arrested and are facing charges, including first-degree murder, in connection to the shootings that took place around the East St. Louis area on Sunday, state police announced on Tuesday.

Authorities said human remains of three people were found by Illinois State Police on Sunday at the Samuel Gompers Homes on the 400 block of North 6th Street, authorities said. ISP then requested assistance from their Public Safety Enforcement Group unit, and four other victims were identified by investigators. One person was fatally shot at 39th and Summit streets, and one person was killed and two others injured at Jones Park.

The seven victims were all members of the same family from East St. Louis and related to the 15-year-old girl, Illinois State Police said. Authorities said 49-year-old Cherie May, 25-year-old Shania Thompson, 24-year-old Devin May, 21-year-old Quentin Thompson, and 74-year-old Patricia May were all fatally shot. The 15-year-old’s mother and cousin were also shot but survived.

Lamarion Smiley, a relative of the victims and the girl, told NBC Chicago’s affiliate station in St. Louis that Shania and Quentin Thompson were the 15-year-old girl’s siblings and she shot and killed them both at Jones Park. Patricia May was the teenage girl’s grandmother, Cherie May was her aunt and Devin May was her cousin.

“They took them to Jones Park and they fired off in the vehicle. Hitting my wife 4 times, killing Quentin and Shania Thompson. And shooting my auntie in the face,” he said.

Smiley said his 15-year-old relative “stood over [his] wife trying to kill her, but they had no more bullets.”

The motive for the killings by the two teenagers was a desire to be together no matter the cost, Smiley said.

“They wanted to eliminate everybody that had a problem with the situation,” he said.

The teens had previously run away together several times, Smiley said. Each time, her family found her and brought her back home.

“We let her know, like, you’re 15, you don’t know what love truly is yet,” he said.

The family says the gun used in the shootings was stolen from the girl’s mother before the shooting.

Investigators also said the grandmother’s thumb was cut off.

St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges on Tuesday against Davis, who is charged as an adult:

Five counts of first-degree murder, Two counts of attempted first-degree murder, Two counts of aggravated battery, One count of aggravated vehicular hijacking, One count of dismembering a human body, One count of unlawful use of a stolen firearm

Authorities have not yet requested to transfer the girl’s juvenile case to adult criminal court, however, they did confirm she is facing charges, including first-degree murder. Prosecutors are asking she be tried as an adult and ISP said the St. Clair County State’s Attorney will request a transfer “in the near future.”
