The first Chicago Bears training camp practice takes place on July 31, and it looks like two key defenders who dealt with significant injuries last season are trending in the right direction this summer.
The Arrow Is Pointing Up For Jaylon Johnson
I was looking forward to seeing Jaylon Johnson play cornerback last season. Johnson was coming off consecutive Pro Bowl campaigns and was one season removed from receiving second-team All-Pro recognition. Plus, Johnson was finally about to play in a defense more befitting of his style and with a defensive playcaller in Dennis Allen, who I thought could get more out of the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback than his predecessor, Matt Eberflus, did when he was running the show.
Unfortunately, an offseason groin injury followed by in-season core muscle surgery limited Jaylon Johnson to just seven regular-season games. And while Johnson was able to come back for the season-ending push and the team’s two playoff games, he didn’t look like his old self. The hope is that an offseason of healing could help get Johnson back on the right track. With that in mind, I find this clip to be encouraging:
Bears CB Jaylon Johnson, who earlier this offseason said he wasn’t 100% back from his injuries yet, seems to have progressed well based on his rehab specialist’s IG with this caption:“We back ⚡️100%.” ??: @foot_moe pic.twitter.com/ZxEzX886X5
— Bearsszn (@bearszn) July 9, 2026Judging by the clip above, I’m feeling confident that Jaylon Johnson will enter training camp at 100 percent. We won’t know until the players take to the grass at Halas Hall, but it certainly looks like things are trending in a positive direction.
Minicamp reports from June about Johnson were pretty encouraging. The cornerback’s standout performance during the first session of mandatory minicamp practices stood out for all the right reasons. For what it’s worth, folks around the league still seem to believe in the Bears’ top returning cornerback. One anonymous NFL player personnel evaluator believes Johnson, who landed among the players receiving Honorable Mention status on ESPN’s list of the 10 best cornerbacks, can “get back to his top form” if he can prove to be healthy.

Sometimes, so much happens during NFL minicamp practices that it feels impossible to catch everything. And even when you do catch things, they sometimes get lost in your bookmarks. It happens to the best of us, right?
Anyway, seeing linebacker T.J. Edwards pop up as an off-ball linebacker who received votes in ESPN’s poll of NFL executives, coaches, and scouts ranking the best players at the position reminded me that there were some positive signs for the 29-year-old linebacker during the team’s June minicamp practices:

— Josh Buckhalter (@JoshGBuck) May 24, 2026A transcription of Smith’s words on Edwards:
“T.J. is a great man. I’ve said if he wasn’t married, you’d want him to marry your daughter. He’s a great human being. He’s very, very smart. There’s no ego to him. He’s confident. He’s a great teammate. All those things that you’d want. And he’s a smart football player. So once you’ve lost him, that part, it hurts you because he’s one of your guys. He is a starter. And, once again, he can play all three positions for you. He’s that smart. And he’s a good football player. Once you lose a guy like that, that hurts you, but you gotta move on. That’s part of the game.
Right now, he’s working really hard in his rehab. Coming along really. Our support staff down there, they do a great job with these guys. He is in every one of those meetings; he’s one of the leaders. It does hurt you anytime you lose one of your starters, but you’re hopeful the backup can come in and perform as well.”

Behind projected starters T.J. Edwards and Devin Bush are D’Marco Jackson, Ruben Hyppolite II, Noah Sewell, rookie Keyshaun Elliott, and a returning Jack Sanborn. Hopefully, Chicago’s football team won’t need to go too deep on the depth chart because of the injury bug this season.
