English top-flight sides spent a staggering £3.46 billion this summer, surpassing the previous record of £3.14bn set 12 months earlier. The scale of the spending is even more remarkable when compared with the £1.13bn spent just five years ago, underlining the enormous financial power of Premier League clubs.
The record was broken before the window had even closed, with Manchester City's deadline-day deal for Iliman Ndiaye taking the overall figure beyond last summer's mark. City then confirmed another blockbuster signing shortly after the window shut, bringing in Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for a joint-British record £125 million.
Deadline day itself produced £475m in spending, comfortably above the £391m recorded on the final day of last summer's window.

The huge investment comes as Enzo Maresca begins his reign at the Etihad following Pep Guardiola's departure. City have gone all-in on rebuilding their squad, with the headline deals including Fernandez for £125m and Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m. They also brought in Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille for £85.6m, while the late arrival of Ndiaye from Everton cost around £60m.
City's spending is particularly striking given that they also generated £304m from player sales, meaning their net spend was £154m.
Chelsea were the second-biggest spenders at £349m, although the Blues actually ended the summer with a £33m net profit after bringing in £382m through sales. Their business included the blockbuster £117m signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.
Tottenham Hotspur were next, spending £302m to strengthen after a difficult campaign. Sandro Tonali's club-record arrival could cost up to £100m, while Mateus Fernandes and Savio also commanded substantial fees.
Newcastle United (£268m) and Aston Villa (£256m) completed the top five biggest spenders, with Liverpool (£198m) and Arsenal (£194m) also committing close to £200m.
One of the biggest stories, however, came from newly promoted Ipswich Town. The Tractor Boys spent £171m, more than Manchester United's £148m, as they look to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.
Indeed, the spending power of promoted clubs was one of the defining features of the window. Ipswich's outlay was greater than that of several European giants, while Coventry City spent £126m and Hull City £103m.
The summer also highlighted how much Premier League clubs are now doing business with one another. 35% of transfers involving a fee were between Premier League clubs, up from 30% last year. That figure rises to 44% when looking at Premier League clubs buying players from elsewhere in the English football pyramid.
There were four Premier League deals among the division's five most expensive transfers ever, with Fernandez, Anderson, Rogers and Bradley Barcola all commanding fees of more than £100m.
The combination of television wealth, proven Premier League talent and the inflated asking prices often faced by English clubs shopping abroad has helped drive an extraordinary summer of spending. And with the Premier League's net spend still exceeding £1bn, there is little indication that English football's financial dominance is slowing down.
