All-Star Events, Narrative Shifts, West’s Full-Time Gig, Jets Sign Björck, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

Major League Baseball held their annual Home Run Derby last night, which is still the crown jewel of individual competitions around all-star events. There have been lots of tweaks to the format of that event over the years, including a few this year. But it make me think about how the NHL plays out their individual contests at their all-star event each year. Which made me think about Patrick Kane’s Superman move 14 years ago. Ah, when Blackhawks were the show for the NHL. This was fun. Here’s hoping we see some fun individual efforts when the All-Star Game returns this season.

Scott Wheeler dropped his new top 100 drafted prospect rankings on Tuesday. I broke down the Blackhawks’ league-leading eight mentions on his list earlier this morning.

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) July 14, 2026 One Blackhawks prospect who wasn’t among the eight ranked by Wheeler was forward Mason West, who will make the transition to being a full-time hockey player this fall at Michigan State. Good read on his future here from Scott Powers at The Athletic.

When Mason West was drafted by the Blackhawks in the first round, the question was what could he become when he stopped playing football and committed to hockey. That time is now.My story on West and his future t.co/zs1LnObKW8

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) July 14, 2026 It’s funny how narratives around players can evolve over time because of circumstances and performance. I thought about the talk around some of the current Blackhawks, specifically Connor Bedard, when I read a piece from our Bears guys yesterday about Caleb Williams suddenly being considered a top-ten quarterback in the NFL (by ESPN). For all of the talk about Williams not even being the best quarterback in his own draft class after his rookie year, he’s shutting up his doubters. I can’t wait for Bedard to be able to do the same for the Blackhawks. I cannot recommend this edition of the “32 Thoughts” Podcast highly/strongly enough. Lots to unpack from the Leo Carlsson situation in Anaheim and it’s all in here. Great listen.

Bonus 32 Thoughts interview podMatt & Ryan Keator, who represent Leo Carlsson. They take us through the last 10 months — from negotiations with Anaheim to the offer sheet. Great answers to terrible questions.Link to your preferred platform, here: t.co/Fit34tk4JO

— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) July 13, 2026 The Colorado Avalanche announced they have signed signed forward Fabian Lysell to a one-year deal. This feels like one of those sneaky-good moves that doesn’t get much attention because of the timing. The New York Rangers settled their arbitration case with defenseman Braden Schneider with a one-year deal that has a $5.5M cap hit. The Buffalo Sabres and forward Peyton Krebs settled their arbitration case with a four-year deal that has a $4.5M AAV. The Sabres also announced they have hired John Davidson as senior advisor. Finally, Viggo Björck announced this weekend that he was leaving his club in Sweden, where he was a teammate of Blackhawks rookie forward Anton Frondell. Which was a bit of a surprise. The Winnipeg Jets drafted him eighth overall this summer and announced he has signed his entry-level contract on Monday.
