ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The American Red Cross says its blood supply fell by nearly 25% in June, leading it to declare an emergency blood shortage.
According to the Red Cross, while donations have fallen this summer, the hospitals are performing more transfusions, especially since more traumatic injuries happen during the summer months. Hospitals are using nearly 3,500 more units per week than expected. The shortage is especially serious for people who need platelets and types O positive or B negative blood.
The Red Cross is encouraging people to donate blood to address the shortage. There are dozens of upcoming blood drives in the Rochester region, and anyone who donates blood through July 31 can get a free Fandango movie ticket for up to $15. Here’s what to know:
Scheduling a blood donation appointment
You can visit the Red Cross website to find a blood drive and book an appointment to give blood. You can also schedule an appointment on the Red Cross’s Blood Donor App or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
