Ann Widdecombe’s killing is being treated as terrorism after “new information and evidence” came to light, police have said.
The suspect being held on suspicion of murdering the veteran politician was not known to the anti-terrorism Prevent programme, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood told the Commons on Monday.
The suspect, a 28-year-old white British man, was arrested on suspicion of murder by armed police at a council house in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Saturday evening.
He was rearrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism on Monday, Counter Terrorism Policing South East said.
Widdecombe, 78, was found dead on Thursday at about 11.40am at her house in Haytor, Devon, more than 260 miles away from the suspect’s home.
The i Paper understands the suspect lived in a small council house on the outskirts of Rotherham. Neighbours claim to have seen the man leaving his home and getting into a red Vauxhall Corsa, holding something that appeared to be a “wooden stick”.
CCTV shows a man getting into a vehicle at about 7.50am on Wednesday, less than six hours before police believe Widdecombe was attacked.
A relative of the suspect, who said they had not “seen or spoken to” the man in years, said: “He’s quiet and as far as I know he never goes out.”
“I never had anything to do with him. The last time I saw him was when his dad was in hospital. His arrest is a massive shock for all the family.”
It is believed the suspect had attended a nearby high school along with his two brothers, one of whom served in the Armed Forces.
Neighbours said armed police arrived at the terraced property at about 9pm on Saturday, just before the kick-off of England’s World Cup match against Norway.
Residents told The Telegraph he was seen carrying a “wooden pole”, with police units seizing a red car from the driveway at about 3am.
One neighbour who saw the footage told The Times: “It looked like a wooden stick or an iron bar, about a foot long, and it was pushing up underneath his T-shirt as he got into the car.”
