Broncos Camp: Denver Broncos RB room has exciting potential ...Middle East

The Denver Broncos will report for training camp with veterans reporting on July 28 and rookies reporting on July 22 and the running back room has some exciting potential behind it going into 2026.

Denver Broncos RB Preview

Coming into training camp, the Denver Broncos have six backs on their current 90-man roster.

J.K. Dobbins RJ Harvey Jonah Coleman Tyler Badie Jaleel McLaughlin Cody Schrader

While competition was more evident last year, it doesn’t seem like there will be much competition between the top three backs on the roster.

J.K. Dobbins returns as the primary ball-carrier, while RJ Harvey enters his second season with more experience and understanding of the Broncos’ offense. Harvey had to step up when Dobbins went down due to injury last season, and the run game as a whole had a hard time getting going.

All signs point to the Broncos believing it was a scheme issue rather than a personnel issue because they brought nearly everybody back from last season and added Jonah Coleman in the NFL Draft.

Jaleel McLaughlin and Tyler Badie are back on one-year deals and Cody Schrader returns after being on the practice squad last season.

How many backs will Broncos keep on the active roster?

Typically, the Broncos have kept four backs on their active roster over the last three seasons since Payton took over as head coach. I believe that will continue to be the case here going into 2026.

Dobbins, Harvey, and Coleman are easy locks for the roster, but the fourth spot should be up for grabs between McLaughlin, Badie, and Schrader.

McLaughlin added some muscle mass this offseason to help his game evolve even further, and he’s maintained a 4.8-yard per carry average on over 200 career carries as a member of the Broncos. Badie was the Broncos’ trusted pass protection back last season and was used primarily in passing down situations and third down, two-minute looks, but Denver’s offense was easy to telegraph whenever he was in because the Broncos never really handed him the football.

All of these things could change with Davis Webb taking over playcalling duties, and a fourth back is needed in the event of an injury once again. If Dobbins goes down, my belief is that Coleman is his insurance policy, while allowing Harvey to stay in the ongoing ‘Joker’ role that Payton has implemented him in.

McLaughlin, Badie, and Schrader will be under the microscope during training camp and preseason, and whoever performs the best and can offer some value on special teams will more than likely be the fourth back who makes it.

It’s easy to envision that whichever backs don’t make it will be back on the practice squad, where they can continue to develop inside of their offensive system, and there’s flexibility when it comes to practice squad elevations to the gameday roster.

Regardless, this room has a lot of exciting potential behind it if Dobbins can stay healthy, Harvey can continue to thrive in his role, and Coleman can become the team’s third-down back.
