The Opener: Draft, Peters, Red Sox ...Middle East

News by : (MLBtraderumors) -

After Friday’s game was rained out, the Brewers and Pirates will make it up with a doubleheader today at PNC Park.  Brandon Sproat and Shane Drohan are expected to start for Milwaukee in the two games, while the Buccos will send Braxton Ashcraft and Bubba Chandler to the mound in the twin bill.  The 47-47 Pirates are in fourth place in the NL Central and 12.5 games back of first-place Milwaukee, but winning the series against the division champs would likely help Pittsburgh narrow its 4.5-game deficit in the NL wild card race.

1. Draft Day

The first 135 picks of the 2026 MLB Draft will be made today, and rounds 5-20 taking place on Sunday.  All eyes are on the White Sox with the first overall selection, and there’s still speculation over who exactly Chicago will select.  Most pundits agree that the 1-1 player will be one of UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky, Georgia Tech catcher Vahn Lackey, or high school shortstop Grady Emerson, though the Sox could still surprise us with a pick from further down the draft boards.  MLB Trade Rumors will have the full list of first-round picks as they’re announced throughout the afternoon, beginning at noon CT.

2. Peters rides the cycle in Pale Hose rout

Speaking of the White Sox, the AL Central leaders enjoyed a 14-1 win over the Athletics on Friday that was highlighted by a cycle from center fielder Tristan Peters.  The rookie’s final two hits came in the same inning, as Peters hit both a two-run homer and an RBI triple during Chicago’s eight-run outburst in the bottom of the seventh.  Peters is the seventh player in White Sox franchise history to hit for the cycle, and also the second Canadian in MLB history to complete the feat.  The cycle continues a breakout year for Peters, acquired in a somewhat under-the-radar trade with the Rays last December.  After making his MLB debut in the form of four games with Tampa in 2025, Peters is hitting .303/.357/.484 over 270 plate appearances and playing strong defense as Chicago’s regular center fielder.

3. Red-hot Red Sox run late, but keep rolling

After starting the season with three months of dismal baseball, the Red Sox are now only 1.5 games out of the final AL wild card slot.  Boston’s record is still only 44-48, but the Sox are 12-2 in their last 14 games, and extended their winning streak to seven games with Friday’s 6-2 win over the Mets.  Simply getting to New York was a victory unto itself for the Red Sox, as plane troubles delayed their arrival by almost a full day.  The Sox didn’t get to Citi Field until around 4pm CT Friday in advance of a 6:50pm CT start, and the game was already pushed back from the original 6:15pm start to give Boston more time to arrive and prepare.  Wilyer Abreu and Anthony Seigler each hit two-run homers for the Sox, and Sonny Gray limited the Mets to one run over six innings to lower his ERA to 2.54 over 95 2/3 innings this season.
