The ultimate summer weekend for Chicagoans has arrived, with Windy City Smokeout, the Race to Mackinac, the Taste of Chicago and an almost-perfect forecast.
It appears Mother Nature got the hint and is making up for the Fourth of July, when rain dampened celebrations for many across the Chicago area.
From sailing to food and concerts, there’s so much to do – and eat – this weekend.
And you can’t have the perfect Chicago summer weekend without a day on the water. Some sailors NBC Chicago spoke with weren’t going to the “Playpen” – rather the Race to Mackinac.
“It’s the end result of getting up to the island, it’s just rewarding,” said Jason Parkes, who is sailing to Mackinac Island. “All these people, we do it every year, and they keep coming back for a reason.”
If Mackinac feels too far, then just head up to the United Center for Windy City Smokeout – but don’t forget to bring your cowboy boots. Country music sensations are set to take the stage, from Lainey Wilson to Hudson Westbrook and Jordan Davis.
There is more than just country, however.
““The food, the people, just the energy, the vibes, it’s all amazing,” one attendee said.
When it comes to food events, the Taste of Chicago may take the cake.
Visitors sampled everything from lamb chops and spicy fried pickles to potstickers and Chicago-style cheesecake.
One festivalgoer loaded up on food and still had room for more.
“Ribs, I’ve had fried Oreos, gator bites with the sautéed onions, and a Gatorade to drink and I am looking to find something else,” she said.
Featuring dozens of vendors, the Taste of Chicago runs through Sunday.
