The San Antonio Spurs have done it again!
As they were frequently able to achieve during their Tim Duncan/Tony Parker/Manu Ginobili era, the Spurs managed to get their latest incumbent future Hall of Famer to sign at a slight discount and stick around.
Per Shams Charania of ESPN, two-time All-Star center Victor Wembanyama has agreed to a five-season, $252 million rookie-scale maximum extension with the Spurs. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year will have a player option in that final season.
Wembanyama agreed to a maximum tied into 25 percent of the NBA’s salary cap, rather than a 30 percent supermax deal that would have paid him $303 million across the course of the deal.
Eagle-eyed NBA fans will no doubt recall that the Oklahoma City Thunder re-signed their two young All-Star second bananas, small forward Jalen Williams and center Chet Holmgren, to both versions of these contract extensions.
Williams agreed to a 30 percent supermax, while Holmgreen inked a 25 percent max. While Williams’ sticker tag could increase depending on All-NBA and All-Star team appearances, Holmgren’s will stay flat. Wembanyama is now on the Holmgren track, even though he was eligible for the more lucrative Williams deal.
Re-Signing Wembanyama an Obvious Choice for the Spurs

Mandatory Credit: Scott Wachter-Imagn ImagesFoul-heavy NBA Finals defeat aside, extending the 22-year-old Frenchman was an absolute no-brainer move for Spurs head honcho R.C. Buford.
The jumbo-sized big man averaged 25.0 points on .512/.349/.827 shooting splits, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 3.1 blocks, and 1.0 swipes a night in his 64 healthy bouts for the 62-win Spurs. He, Fox, Harper, and Castle then led the team to its first Finals berth since 2014. While they took double-digit leads in all five games, they also typically ran out of steam in most second halves, ultimately falling 4-1 to the New York Knicks.
Wembanyama is now the second member of the Spurs’ core to be locked up to a massive deal, as embattled two-time All-Star point guard De’Aaron Fox’s brutal four-year, $221.7 million extension kicks in next season.
How long Fox will remain in San Antonio is anyone’s guess. Hampered by health issues, he was a shadow of himself in the later rounds of the playoffs. Head coach Mitch Johnson weirdly insisted on playing him more minutes than his understudy Dylan Harper, despite Fox clearly laboring. Despite Fox’s epic price tag, young guards Harper and Stephon Castle are clearly the next-most important pieces on the roster behind Wembanyama.
The fact that San Antonio made the 2026 NBA Finals with all three of Wembanyama, Harper and Castle still on their rookie-scale salaries is a testament to the club’s impressive youth movement.

Mandatory Credit: Scott Wachter-Imagn ImagesYossi Gozlan of The Third Apron observes that San Antonio will now be able to avoid the NBA’s punitive luxury tax for at least the next two seasons thanks to Wembanyama opting not to take the 30 percent max for which he was definitely eligible.
When Castle’s (probable) own maximum contract kicks in for the 2028-29 season, San Antonio will be well into the luxury tax, Gozlan observes — unless, of course, the Spurs can find a taker for Fox’s money by then.
Given the fact that the Philadelphia 76ers somehow got off their egregious Paul George overpay just two seasons into the deal, it’s certainly possible!
