While most of the Chicago area will see “fantastic” weather Wednesday, an air quality alert was in effect for some parts.
“Right now, it’s not horrible. We’re in that moderate category,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said early Wednesday morning. “Later today, we’re expected to see it increase.”
According to the National Weather Service, Indiana Department of Environmental Management officials declared Wednesday an “air quality action day,” with ozone levels expected to be in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups range.”
“Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma should limit prolonged outdoor exposure,” the alert, which also includes Berrien County in southwestern Michigan, said.
About 6:30 a.m., air quality tracking website AirNow showed air quality in Chicago and northwest Indiana as “moderate,” which ranks as level two of six. The air quality was expected to worsen into the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category by afternoon, which ranks as level three.
“Even if the forecast is Orange (unhealthy for sensitive groups), there may be times during the day when air quality is OK for outdoor activities,” the site said. “Ozone is often lower in the morning.”
Temperatures Wednesday will be in the mid-to-upper 80s under mostly sunny skies, Roman said. It will also start to feel more humid Wednesday and into Thursday, as dew points rise.
“It’s getting a little stickier,” Roman said. “Definitely noticeable.”
Overnight, some showers could develop, lasting into early Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon and evening brings another chance for thunderstorms, with gusty winds and heavy downpours possible.
“That will really be the only day I’m concerned about,” Roman said, with the main concern between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. “We’ll have to watch that.”
By next week, 90-degree temperatures were back in the forecast, Roman said.
