1971 No. 1 Hit's Silly but Iconic Opening Line Was Never Meant to Make the Final Cut ...Saudi Arabia

The odd yet cheerful song, because of and not in spite of its head-scratching lyrics, earned a strong six-week spot atop Billboard's list. The most ironic part? That delightfully weird intro was never meant to see the inside of the band's recording booth.

"I was working on some music and Hoyt walked in and asked if I had heard his song that the guys turned down," Negron told the outlet. "I said, 'No, I hadn’t.' He sat down and played me a new demo, and at that point Jeremiah was a prophet. I said that wouldn’t work. Hoyt originally had Jeremiah as a bullfrog, but had just changed it. I knew that if I could just scream that line from the rooftops, 'Jeremiah was a bullfrog,' I could make it a hit, plus 'joy to the world, all the boys and girls,' is just a wonderful sentiment. I said that I would do it and Danny and Cory were not happy because they had turned it down and thought that I should have agreed with them. There was a little friction for a while because I had broken the rules, but it was lucky that I did, ha ha, because everyone became happy when it became a hit."

For the following five years, the band would chart multiple times, but things came to a halt when Negron's battles with substance abuse and heroin addiction got out of control. Rolling Stone reported that they disbanded in 1976 and got back together for a brief stint in 1982 before breaking up again in 1985 due to Negron's relapse. Negron was even forced to live on L.A.'s infamous Skid Row for a time after losing the millions he made during his band's successes.
