2026 DUTCH EUROPEAN SWIMMING TRIALS

July 2nd – July 5th Tongelreep National Swimming Centre, Eindhoven, the Netherlands LCM (50m) SwimSwam Preview Meet Central Entry List Live Results Livestream

On day one of the 2026 Dutch European Swimming Trials, we’ve already seen two national records bite the dust on the men’s side of the house.

We reported how Sean Niewold established a new Dutch benchmark of 22.69 in the men’s 50m butterfly, followed shortly by Koen de Groot lowering his own 50m breaststroke national record down to 26.68.

However, perhaps the most impressive new Dutch standard came in a women’s race, as versatile 26-year-old Marrit Steenbergen wowed the crowd with a monster time of 58.33 in the 100m backstroke.

Steenbergen clinched the victory by over a second, with runner-up Maaike de Waard representing the next-closest swimmer in 59.40, as Lotte Hosper rounded out the podium in 1:01.18.

As for Olympian and world champion Steenbergen, her effort this evening took down the former Dutch NR of 58.65, set by retired Olympian, World Championships medalist and European Championships medalist Kira Toussaint at the 2021 Eindhoven Qualification Meet.

Steenbergen’s personal best in the 100m back entering this domestic selection meet stood at the 58.96 she logged around this same time last year. That former best-ever performance was her only other sub-59-second time of her already-prolific career.

Comparing Steenbergen’s head-turning feat to Toussaint’s former Dutch record, the former was able to maintain a higher gear on the back half to beat Toussaint’s outing by .32 overall.

Steenbergen’s New NR – 58.33 Toussaint’s Old NR – 58.65 Steenbergen’s Old PB – 58.96 28.29 28.16 28.77 30.04 30.49 30.19

Steenbergen now ranks 6th in the world in this 1back event in a time which would have garnered the gold at the 2024 European Championships and 4th place at last year’s World Championships.

The Dutch ace’s incredible performance comes on the heels of the stunning World Record she put up just last week in the women’s 100m freestyle event.

While racing at the Sette Colli Trophy, Steenbergen, who entered the Italian competition as the only woman to have ever been sub-52 seconds twice in the race, unleashed 51.68 to become the fastest female of all time.
