ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Fans gathered at the Rochester Public Market on Friday night to watch Spain defeat Uruguay and secure the top spot in their group for the FIFA World Cup.
It was the second night in a row that the public market hosted a World Cup watch party on two giant screens. During Friday’s group stage game, Spain won 1-0, which eliminated Uruguay from advancing. News10NBC spoke with some excited Spain fans, including one who moved across the world to Rochester just six months ago. He says the watch party was a great chance to meet other Spanish people in Rochester.

“We were missing something like this in Rochester, so we finally found it. And this is great, with all the Spanish and everyone here,” he said.
The watch party ran from 6 p.m. to midnight, with tables, seating, soccer-themed activities, and live music. The public market isn’t the only place that has held World Cup watch parties. On June 12, Rochester’s East End was packed with people cheering on Team USA during an outdoor watch party for the first group stage match against Paraguay. This marks the first men’s World Cup that the U.S. has hosted since 1994.
