USA Swimming and the USOPC are both offering Operation Gold bonuses to American swimmers this summer, significantly ramping up the financial stakes for the peak American meet this season.
Operation Gold is the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee’s program that rewards athletes for international success beyond whatever is offered by sponsors and international federations.
The USOPC offers a baseline amount, while USA Swimming (like other NGBs) has the opportunity to offer Supplemental Awards.
The funds fluctuate throughout the quad, generally increasing as the Olympics draw nearer. While active NCAA student-athletes cannot accept (most) prize money, there is an explicit exception written into the rules for Operation Gold funds.
Using the 2026 payment structure, a swimmer who won 3 individual gold medals and a relay silver, as Katie Ledecky did at the last edition in 2018, would earn a $5,000 qualification bonus, $6,250 from the USOPC for the gold, $60,000 from USA Swimming for the individual gold medals, and $5,000 from USA Swimming for the relay silver, for $76,250 total.
The meet itself does not offer any prize money, unlike the Short Course World Championships that will happen at the end of the year.
