Auqib Nabi bags 4-fer in maiden IND A appearance on dead Galle wicket, serves another reminder to selectors ...Middle East

J&K pacer Auqib Nabi might not be the express pacer that so many of the Indian fans might be looking for, but he might just be the skilled bowler, that the Test side should be looking for. The 29-year-old pacer showed once again, why his skill with the ball is second to none; on Saturday, on a placid Galle wicket, in his very first IND A outing, he bagged a four-fer against SL A, returning with figures of 4/58 in 19.4 overs.

Mind you, this was a surface where India had scored 452/6d, and the Lankans were going strong with 260/3 in 75 overs. But then Auqib Nabi had other plans. Till that point, he had no wickets to his name, and suddenly went on to bag 4, to help restrict the hosts for just 330, giving his side a substantial lead of 122.

Two of his four wickets were caught, while the other two were LBW. And along with him, Yash Thakur and Harsh Dubey chipped in with two wickets each as well. This performance, once again will put him under the spotlight, and ask the selectors a simple questions — ‘when is he getting his India Test cap?’

You see, the selectors had an excellent opportunity to test him in the one-off IND vs AFG Test this month, but somehow Nabi was not picked, much to the shock and disappointment of many experts. In fact, that was the perfect match, since it was not part of the WTC Test cycle, where in India is struggling at the moment, at 6th spot — with 4 wins and 4 losses in 9 matches.

India play their next Test only in November, against New Zealand, and this performance should go a long way, in getting Nabi his debut cap. And not this alone, his domestic performances have been screaming selection for a long time. This year, the man had 60 wickets in the entire Ranji season, which is quite rare for a pacer. The 2024-25 season saw him get 44; a total of 104 wickets in 18 FC matches spread across two years, where he AVG was only 13.14, and SR was 29.30. His 18 matches also saw him grab 13 fifers, the second most in two seasons — but still the most by a pacer in the domestic circuit.

Nabi might still have some distance to cover, before he eventually gets a space in the team, with so many pacers already in the que, but that his addition might add that ‘swing’ aspect, that not many apart from Jasprit Bumrah generate, among the current crop.
