I had my doubts about the Montez Sweat trade when it went down, but he has played well since his acquisition. For what it’s worth, I’m not the only one who sees how well Seat has performed. Chicago Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson couldn’t help himself when talking about Montez Sweat during the team’s recent minicamp practice sessions:
“This was a guy that played at a very high level. I talked to him yesterday about, hey, I would argue it was the best year of his career. Whether that showed up statistically or not, that’s debatable, but his ability to play the run, play the pass, I thought he did a really nice job, and hopefully it’s something we can piggyback on and carry that momentum into this year.”

When you look at the numbers, you can understand why Johnson was gushing about Sweat’s 2025 campaign. He led the team with 10 sacks, 18 quarterback hits, 13 tackles-for-loss, and three forced fumbles. The advanced metrics seem to think highly of sweat, too. He registered 36 hurries, 37 stops, and a 72.1 grade at season’s end that ranked 38th among 119 edge defenders that qualified for PFF’s leaderboard.
Much has been made about Chicago’s lack of impact additions to the defensive line this offseason. And rightfully so! But at least this group still has Sweat, who was a difference-maker on the defensive side of the trenches.
Montez Sweat might be the first Bears player to land on the NFL’s Top 100 players list, but I would be truly surprised if he were the last. Chicago’s football team has contributors on both sides of the ball who could make a strong case for inclusion. I have a hunch that quarterback Caleb Williams is going to make the cut at some point. How high he ranks will be fun to see when the league gets around to posting the updates on its Twitter/X account. Stay tuned.
