CUBS LINEUP — Tonight, the Chicago Cubs are going for a four-game sweep of the Mets on the road. And if you’re cool, we’ll be rooting for them together at our free watch party! I hope to see you there. I also hope to see Matthew Boyd return strong from the IL and Freddy Peralta get crushed by a suddenly surging Chicago Cubs offense.
Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for the finale in Flushing.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Michael Conforto, RF Michael Busch, 1B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, LF Nico Hoerner, 2B Pedro Ramirez, DH Miguel Amaya, C Dansby Swanson, SSFor his career, Freddy Peralta has been basically split neutral against lefties and righties. But this season, the gap has exploded:
vsLHH: .265/.329/.484 (.352 wOBA)vsRHH: .232/.326/.313 (.294 wOBA)
Lefties have accounted for 11 of the 12 homers he’s allowed and they’re hitting way more line drives and many fewer groundballs. Hence the Cubs getting Conforto back in there, as well as the switch-hitting Ramirez.
New York Mets Lineup:
Carson Benge, RF Bo Bichette, 3B Juan Soto, DH Mark Vientos, 1B Francisco Alvarez, C AJ Ewing, CF Ronny Mauricio, SS M.J. Melendez, LF Brett Baty, 2BPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Matthew Boyd, LHP
Matthew Boyd has spent a significant chunk of time on the Injured List this year, with what was effectively three injuries (and one surgery). But when he has been out there (just five starts), the one good sign was the increase in whiffs and strikeouts. I’m curious to see if that comes immediately back tonight, or if there are still a ton of cobwebs to shake off.
Mostly, however, I just want (need) him to be healthy and make his way through this game and the next few months without going back up on the shelf again. The Cubs cannot keep their heads above water with another injury or setback. Not right now with (almost) everyone else out.
With Boyd back, the Cubs optioned Gavin Hollowell to Iowa to make room on the 26-man roster.
New York Mets: Freddy Peralta, RHP
The Cubs have faced Freddy Peralta many times throughout his career. And while that mostly with him on the Brewers, they did actually face him as a Met back in April: 5.2 IP, 3H, 3ER, 2BB, 3K.
But for whatever reason, Peralta hasn’t quite been himself this year (which is bad timing, as he is an impending free agent). His strikeout rate is down, his hard hit rate is up, and his line drive rate is up. There are some things still going well for him, but on the whole, it’s not particularly pretty in terms of results (4.83 ERA).
Now, with that said, that ERA is extremely inflated by his most recent outing against the Phillies, who scored 10 runs in 2.2 innings pitched. Exclude just that game and his ERA is 3.90. Still, that wasn’t his only bad outing this year. The Cardinals also plated 6 earned runs in 6.0 IP, and the Marlins scored 8 total across 11.2 IP (two starts). There have been plenty of good games, too, but he just doesn’t seem to be quite as dominant as he was at his peak in Milwaukee.
All of that said, you won’t find me counting a 30-year-old Freddy Peralta as an “easy” matchup. I think he’s a very good pitcher and is playing in front of one of the worst defenses in baseball.
