The 2nd of four “Texas Senior Circuit” meets went off at the beginning of June, racing at the SMU pool from June 5-7.

Olympic gold medalist Ryan Held raced his first USA Swimming meet since his retirement last August. He swam the 50 free and 100 backstroke prelims only. He stopped the clock at 23.24 in the 50 free, two seconds off his lifetime best of 21.50 from July of 2023.

In the 100 backstroke, he swam 58.22, a two-and-a-half second add from his best of 55.61, which he set back in April of 2023.

When he announced his retirement, Held said he would still be “around on the pool deck” as a masters swimmer. He has raced one masters meet since then, swimming the 1000 freestyle at the FarOut 1000 meet in Plano where the only event was the 1000 free. He won the men’s event in 10:10.29.

Another Olympian, Olivia Smoliga also raced at the meet. She won all of her events, swimming 55.79 in the 100 free, 28.37 in the 50 back, and 26.83 in the 50 fly. These swims were a little off her season bests in the 50s of 28.06 (back) and 26.73 (fly), but her 100 freestyle marked the first 100 she has raced since returning to competition in October.

Outside of the Olympians, there were a few other notable swims and swimmers at the meet. On the men’s side, the breaststrokers were very strong.

LSU graduate Mitch Mason won the 50 and 100 breaststroke events, swimming 27.30 in the 50 and 1:01.09 in the 100. His season best times in the event stand at 27.10, which he swam to finish 3rd at the Pro Swim Series in Sacramento, and 1:00.50, which he swam to finish 3rd in the 100 at the Pro Swim Series in Austin.

Luke Barr, who graduated from Indiana last spring, and began training at Texas Ford Aquatics as a pro last fall, won the 200 breast (2:15.09) and the 50 fly (23.98), and picked up 2nd place finishes in the 100 breast (1:01.25) and 50 back (25.83).

On the women’s side, Maddy Parker had a strong meet as well. Parker recently finished her junior season at Southern Methodist University, where she finished 13th in the 50 free and 14th in the 100 free at the ACC Championships.

At the Senior Circuit meet, she finished 2nd in the 50 free, touching in 26.09, and in the 100 free, swimming 56.20. Both swims were off her personal best times of 25.86 and 56.11 from the U.S. Open Championships in December.

Parker also picked up a win and lifetime best in the 200 freestyle of 2:04.47, which took a second off the 2:05.37 mark she set in December of 2023.

She also swam the 50 backstroke prelims (30.35) and the 50 fly prelims (29.06) setting new personal best times in both events.

Distance swimmer Hayden Miller, who swims collegiately at Texas A&M, where she just finished a redshirt season, also raced, winning the women’s 400 freestyle in 4:24.25. This was her first time racing the event since the 2024 Olympic Trials.

In the 200 free, she swam 2:06.09 to finish 2nd to Parker, and she set a season best 59.27 in the 100 freestyle prelims.

Kate Canales was one of the top club swimmers at the meet, winning three events. She is committed to swim at Florida in the fall of 2027.

She won the 50 breaststroke in 32.13, the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.30, and the 200 IM in 2:19.98. Her 200 IM was a new season best time, and was a smidge off her lifetime best 2:18.35 from last summer’s Junior Nationals.

Canales also swam the 100 fly prelims, setting the top time of 1:02.32, and she finished 2nd in the 200 breaststroke with a season best 2:39.61.

Other Notable Swims

Kennedi Southern (LAC) — Southern, who recently finished her sophomore year of high school, won the 50 freestyle in 26.04. This was a tenth add from her season best 25.90, which she set at the Fort Lauderdale Open in May. She also set a season best 58.11 in the 100 free, and a personal best 29.71 in the 50 back. Cullen Kahl (MAC) — Another 16-year-old, Magnolia Aquatics’ Cullen Kahl won the men’s 400 IM in a season best 4:27.77, which was only three tenths off his lifetime best 4:27.49 from last July. That time ranks him 8th among 15-16 American boys in the event this season. He also set a personal best time of 2:05.69 in the 200 backstroke to rank 18th in the country for 15-16 boys. Francis Brennan (SMU) — Canadian Francis Brennan won the men’s 200 freestyle in 1:49.55, a new personal best time and the 6th fastest time in Canada this season. He just finished his freshman season at SMU.
