ROCHESTER, N.Y. — News10NBC is tracking storms for Thursday afternoon that could bring isolated strong winds, downpours, and thunder. We’ve issued a Yellow Alert, with the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier having the highest chance of seeing storms.
It’s been a week since our last Yellow Alert, which we issued for a wind storm that toppled trees across the area and caused 30,000 power outages at times. The storm uprooted trees and damaged homes in Pittsford, Irondequoit, Fairport, Mendon, the city, and other areas. In addition, there was an EF-1 tornado in Yates County.
Do we have to worry about such strong storm damage for Thursday? First Alert Meteorologist Nate Morris says the storm potential isn’t as severe as last week. Since the storms are expected to be isolated and the winds aren’t expected to be as severe, the tree damage should be isolated.
However, people should still watch out for possible tree damage. Rain saturates the soil, making it easier for even moderate wind gusts to knock trees over. Trees with broad leaves can catch the wind more easily and be even more susceptible to falling over. See Nate’s full explanation in the video in this story.
