The Federal Aviation Administration issued the ground stop around 4:45 p.m. and it continued until 6 p.m. when it was allowed to expire.

As of 6 p.m., flights to O’Hare were allowed to land but they were delayed an average of almost 3 hours.

Flights departing from O’Hare were also impacted by the storms, with a 30-minute delay on average as of 5:30 p.m.

There was no impact to flights in or out of Midway Airport as of 5:50 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for most of the Chicago area until 10 p.m., officials said.

The biggest threats with the storms will be damaging wind gusts and hail, “however, can’t rule out an isolated tornado either,” Storm Team 5 Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said.
