You don’t have to be an Olympian to swim fast in Fort Lauderdale. The proof was in the water this past weekend at the Swim Fort Lauderdale Speedo Summer Classic, where swimmers of all ages combined to shatter an astounding 21 meet records.

Leo Madera, 10, of Gulliver Swim Club, had a near-perfect weekend in the pool, sweeping all nine of his events and rewriting the record book in the 9-10 boys category.

“When I first started swimming, I thought it would be really hard,” the young swimmer said in an on-deck interview. “But then I started winning, randomly, so I just kept going!”

Before They Were Stars: A look through the record book

Nearly as compelling as the records that fell are the ones that remain untouched. Before they were Olympians, NCAA champions or national team members, their paths led through the Fort Lauderdale Summer Classic.

Back in 2017, a young Erika Pelaez, left a lasting mark on the meet. The current NC State standout and local fan favorite, grew up swimming in South Florida. She still holds eight meet records from that jaw-dropping June weekend:

Girls 9-10 200 Free 2:18.05 Girls 9-10 50 Fly 32.11 Girls 9-10 200 IM 2:37.28 Girls 9-10 50 Free 29.41 Girls 9-10 100 Back  1:11.04 Girls 9-10 100 Free  1:03.44 Girls 9-10 50 Back 33.62 Girls 9-10 100 Fly 1:11.00

In 2019, three swimmers from Wisconsin’s Elmbrook Swim Club traveled to Fort Lauderdale and left their own marks on the record book, combining to set six meet records that remain untouched today.

Lucy Thomas, who would go on to become a U.S. National Team member and Stanford swimmer, still holds two records:

Girls 13-14 200 Breast 2:38.35 Girls 13-14 100 Breast 1:11.61

Reilly Tiltmann, who would later become an NCAA standout at UVA, remains on the record sheet as well.

Girls 15&O 100 Fly mark of 1:01.16.

And a then 13-year-old, Maggie Wanezek, now a Wisconsin All-American and a top American backstroker, set three records that remain unbroken.

Girls 13-14 50 Free 26.83 Girls 13-14 200 Back  2:19.69 Girls 13-14 100 Back 1:03.03

And then came Regan Smith. In 2018, a promising 16-year-old from Minnesota’s Riptide Swim Team, arrived in Fort Lauderdale. The future Olympic medalist and world-record holder would set meet records in the 100 back, 200 back and 200 fly. Eight years later, all three still stand.

While this past weekend undoubtedly belonged to the record-setters, the names that came before them stood out just as much. Looking through the record book, it’s hard not to notice how many future stars once passed through Fort Lauderdale on summer weekends like this one.

The fast pool, storied facility, ocean breezes, and hospitality as warm as the weather, make it a favorite stop for swimmers. It’s a place where memories as well as records are made.

Only time will tell who the next stars of the sport will be, but who knows? Maybe they are already in the water.
