French prime minister Sébastian Lecornu announced that 40 people in the country have died by drowning since last Thursday.
The announcement comes as the country, alongside the rest of its western European neighbors, endure a record heat wave.
Lecornu took to the mic to address the public about heat wave safety early today, in which France recorded its hottest day on record. The 30-point location average across the day equaled 29.8 degrees Celcius (85.6 Fahrenheit), up from the previous record of 29.4 (84.9) in 2003 and 2019. Yesterday, the capital city of Paris hit 37.7 C (99.9 F), the hottest it has ever been in June. The heat is expected to plateau, or even climb, throughout the rest of the work week.
Some are coping with the heat by taking to rivers, lakes, and canals. French sports minister Marina Ferrari says many are doing so without evaluating the risks.
“It’s not something to be taken lightly, going swimming in unsupervised areas during a heatwave,” Ferrari said.
In the Seine river, which runs through the heart of Paris, a 13-year-old girl died Sunday night after jumping in the water with her family despite not knowing how to swim. In Lyon, a professional footballer was pulled out of a river in critical condition. Many of the specific instances reported share a common thread of people swimming in areas in which swimming is explicitly prohibited or at least unsupervised. Many victims also fall on the younger side.
Heat waves that come early in heat season, when open bodies of water are still cold, are particularly dangerous. This is because jumping into cold water on a hot day can cause thermal shock, potentially leading to a spiking heart rate, hyperventilation, and more. SwimSwam covered this what British lifesaving organizations said about this during a heat wave in England and Wales last month that also caused an uptick in drownings, which you can read about here.
In neighboring Germany, the country’s Lifesaving Association reported six fatal swimming incidents between Friday and Sunday.
