Contamination and high bacteria levels were impacting multiple suburban Chicago beaches Tuesday, with several advising against swimming.
In Cook County, Elder Park Beach in Winnetka was closed to swimming, with a contamination advisory in effect. In Lake County, Rosewood Beach in Highland Park was closed for swimming due to high bacteria levels, as was the popular Illinois Beach State Park Resort Beach in Zion.
The Park District of Highland Park posted about the advisory about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
“The Rosewood Beach Swimming area is closed today, June 23 due to high bacteria,” the post, on social media, said. “While swimming is not permitted, the beach remains open.”
The Lake County Health Department collects water quality samples from Lake Michigan beaches four days a week. On inland lakes, they are collected twice a month.

“Collected water samples are tested for E. coli bacteria,” the department said. “E. coli bacteria is found in the intestines of almost all warm-blooded animals. While not all strains of E. coli are the same, certain strains can make humans sick if ingested in high enough concentrations.”
If water samples come back high for E. coli — at 100 ml — officials are notified and a sign is posted saying the beach is closed for swimming.
“Additionally, since rain events tend to lead to elevated bacteria levels in the water column, we advise that people avoid swimming after a large rain event,” the department said.
