The Resinators (6 p.m. Main Stage)
It’s no secret that Island sounds are amongst the most popular in San Diego, with Ocean Beach the center for a hotbed of San Diego talent. Several of the area’s most popular groups relocated to San Diego to be a part of its thriving music community. One of the hottest bands in town, The Resinators, fits that description. The trio was originally formed in Oregon, circa 2015, making the move to San Diego in 2018. The band currently includes Kyle Cameron (vocals and guitar), Kevin Cameron (bass) and Broc Sanders (drums).According to Kyle Cameron, The Resinators describe themselves as a power trio with a blend of punk rock and reggae. “To be completely honest, there wasn’t a specific moment when we decided to be a reggae band. We’ve always simply played and written music that resonated with us at the time. Reggae music wasn’t something we truly listened to until our high school years. However, the bands that truly stood out and inspired our reggae songs include The Expanders, Rebelution, and Katchafire, among others.”Boasting a slew of radio-friendly tunes in their setlist, The Resinators recently dropped a single titled “Make Up Ur Mind,” with a new 3-track EP due later this summer. They will also be performing at Mission Bay Fest this year on Oct. 18, alongside The Offspring, The Interrupters, Expendables, and more. The Resonators have come a long way since they moved to San Diego. Cameron says having a creative outlet and sharing it with family and friends is what makes the OB Street Fair so special. “This is undoubtedly one of our favorite shows to play every year. It exudes a classic OB vibe,” he said. Cameron notes he prefers the big outdoor stage, though he approaches them the same. “We don’t necessarily follow a strict routine. However, we strive to maintain the same level of energy and professionalism in every performance. Get ready to dance!”
Dave Gilbert Band (1:30 p.m. 92107 Stage)
Rock and roll aficionados will want to check out The Dave Gilbert Band, performing on the 92107 Stage. The band has quite a history in San Diego, having formed in 2014 and playing at every OB Street Fair since. As musicians, their history in the area’s music scene goes back even further. The band includes Gilbert (guitar and vocals), Tim Butler (bass), and siblings Randal Jones (drums) and Kelly Jones (keyboards). “The Jones brothers and I originally started playing together back in 1976, while Tim and I started out playing music together, forming the band Touchy Subjects in 1983.”A resident of the OB and Point Loma area, Gilbert considers the street fair to be important to the area. “There’s a very real sense of community, and it’s always great seeing all of our friends and family there, plus there’s always some excellent acts performing each year. It’s a wonderful event.”Gilbert describes his band’s sound as “rock ‘n’ roll with influences from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and beyond. Our attitude is, a great song is a great song, no matter what.”His introduction to his main instrument, the guitar, came about by accident.“My family bought my mom an acoustic guitar for Christmas in 1968, but she was so busy being a mom and raising three boys that she really didn’t have time to learn to play it,” Gilbert recalled. That guitar wasn’t idle for long.“I’ve always loved music and had already taken chorus in school and private piano lessons, so my parents signed me up for guitar lessons at Apex Music in April 1969 at the Quad in Clairemont.” He cites his influences as being “vast, everyone from Eddie Cochran to Jimi Hendrix, Tommy Tedesco to the Rolling Stones.”Having spent most of his life making music, what does he enjoy most about it?“Being able to hear a song I like, or loved and forgotten about, and then sitting down and learning it,” Gilbert commented. “I think that’s a pretty cool thing to be able to do. I also love being able to connect with people through music. It’s a universal language.”Do he and the band approach festival gigs such as this differently than their regular indoor gigs? “Since we’ll only be playing one set, we look for songs with a festival feel, upbeat and fun! Something so people can forget their troubles, even if it’s just for an hour,” he said. The Dave Gilbert Band’s new single, “Elephant In The Room” is out now.
The Mike & Delci Band (3 p.m. 92107 Stage)
The Mike & Delci Duo, featuring veteran guitarist Michael Head and singer Delci, make their OB Street Fair debut this year with a performance on the 92107 Stage. “I had a running 10-year-plus residency at House of Blues San Diego on the Salvation Stage,” Head recalled about his three-year-long music project. “I invited Delci to join me. We had to quickly learn three hours of material, so that’s how we got it started so fast. That’s how we cut our teeth as a duo.”What can audience members expect on the day?“We play a huge mix of styles,” Head noted. “Right now, we mostly do covers, but we try to make them our own. Our setlist is very diverse, almost comically so. We do Etta James to Billie Eilish, Adele to Led Zeppelin and everything in between. But we bring all of that together by doing them our own way,” he continued. “That’s the unifying factor. The duo is great because we can break down even the biggest song and reimagine it. It’s great to strip things back and hear it in a different way. It almost takes off some of the pressure of the performance as just a duo, but it adds musical magnitude at the same time. It usually shows what the song is really about.”For the Street Fair, the pair will be joined by drummer Rob Garbowski and Head’s son Miles. How does Head feel about playing the Street Fair?“We couldn’t be happier to play the street fair,” he said. “Other than a couple of other things we’ve done, we think of this as our biggest gig to date. Being that my West Coast home is OB – I moved here in 1988 – that makes us even more excited to play. We have done Winston’s and Wonderland as a duo, so bringing the band to a big stage in OB will be amazing.”For his part, Head is looking forward to playing on a big stage. “Bigger outdoor shows, we do love playing with the full band,” he said. “The setlist is a bit more concise and a little less subtle. It needs to translate on a bigger stage, and usually big, but simpler anthemic songs do well for that. Indoors, we can be more intimate, but outside has to be more rockin.”
Zavala Sol (4:30 p.m. 92107 Stage)
Blues combo Zavala Sol make their OB Street Fair debut this year on the 92107 Stage. The SDMA-nominated group has built a solid following through terrific shows that feature top-notch originals, as heard on their two albums to date, most recently, “Bad Habits.”The band features Carrie Zavala (vocals), Mike VanDuyn (lead guitar), Bill Salisbury (bass), and Karl Dring (harp and rhythm guitar). “We’re currently on the hunt for a drummer,” said Zavala good naturedly.“Our sound is definitely blues, but on the rock side of blues,” pointed out Zavala. Her introduction to the blues and music in general came via family. “My Mom kept pushing me to do music, but my career was more important,” Zavala said. “When I retired, I started to do music as a ‘hobby.” My influences are all over the place. My mom listened to everything, so at six years old, I knew songs by the Doobie Brothers, Sly and the Family Stone, The Band, a lot of Motown, Janis Joplin, Big Mama Thornton, Muddy Waters, and so on. She exposed me to all kinds of music.”Zavala is happy to have music as her main occupation. “My favorite thing about being a musician is the people I have met,” she said. “I don’t call them followers or fans. I truly feel like I’ve met incredible friends through this journey.”Zavala Sol is working on new music, with lots of road work ahead. “We are very excited to play the street fair,” Zavala remarked. “Any chance we get for a new venue means a lot to us.” As for a preference for indoor or outdoor shows, “We approach these outdoor shows the same way as club dates, just with more sunscreen,” she joked.
