Mets righty Christian Scott emerged from a bullpen session on Sunday without any issues. He’s working his way back from a right hip impingement. Scott is on track to return to the club sometime next weekend, assuming he avoids any setbacks, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. He’ll be first eligible to come off the 15-day IL on Saturday.
Injuries had already trimmed New York’s rotation to three reliable options when Scott went down. He wasn’t providing much length, but the young righty had delivered a 3.10 ERA through nine starts before the hip issue popped up. Scott’s absence left Nolan McLean and Freddy Peralta to stabilize a pitching staff missing Kodai Senga and Clay Holmes.
The 27-year-old Scott was one of the top pitching prospects in the organization when he debuted in 2024. He posted middling results over nine starts, then went down with a UCL injury midway through his first big-league campaign. The elbow issue ultimately required Tommy John surgery, which cost him all of 2025.
Scott made his return to the majors near the end of April. His repertoire has improved, despite coming back from a significant medical procedure. He’s added more than a tick to his four-seamer. Scott is throwing a slightly slower sweeper, with more drop and horizontal break. It’s been his best swing-and-miss pitch (32.9% whiff rate). After throwing a handful of cutters in 2024, he’s using the pitch 17% of the time this year. It’s his best offering by Run Value. Scott has a solid 26.4% strikeout rate, though it’s come with a double-digit walk rate.
Scott’s injury briefly gave Tobias Myers an opportunity as a starter. The former Milwaukee Brewer was recalled to face the Reds on Monday. Myers was pounded for seven earned runs and failed to get out of the second inning. He’s now back in a relief role. David Peterson had been bumped to the bullpen, but he’ll get another shot to start tonight against Philadelphia. With Senga back and Sean Manaea now working as a starter, it could be a brief return to the rotation for Peterson.
