Most of Ford City Mall will be closing for good this week after a judge ruled last month that the structure should shutter due to unsafe conditions.
The city of Chicago had sought to close the mall because of a myriad of safety issues, and a judge last month partially granted the city’s emergency motion to close the bulk of the mall, which has been a mainstay in the Chicago area for decades.
Under provisions of that order, most of the mall will shut down operations on Monday.
JC Penney, the lone anchor tenant still remaining at the mall, will close its location on Sunday according to the company. Officials are currently looking for a new area to locate the retail store, but none has been announced at this time.
Last month, the city filed the emergency motion as some city leaders pushed to close the mall, calling it a “death trap,” citing serious safety risk and hazardous conditions.
Ald. Derrick Curtis, of the 18th Ward, said the problems have been ongoing for years.
“They have no fire suppression, you have huge pipes in the basement that’s leaking thousands and thousands of gallons of water per day, and they don’t know where it’s coming from—the floor, the ground could give out at any time because it’s washing everything away,” he said.
Pictures submitted to the court show repeated issues with leaks and flooding in the basement and throughout the mall. The city initially reached an agreement with the owner to vacate tenants in the main part of the mall, including JCPenney.
Stores located outside of the main portion of the mall will not be impacted by the closure, and a movie theater located at the site will also stay open according to officials.
