Dodgers Notes: Treinen, McDermott, Stewart, Snell ...Middle East

The Dodgers placed right-hander Blake Treinen on the 15-day injured list yesterday, as Treinen is dealing with inflammation in his throwing elbow.  As manager Dave Roberts told MLB.com’s Sonja Chen and other reporters, Treinen felt soreness the day after his last outing, an inning of scoreless work in Friday’s 6-5 win over the Orioles.

Roberts wasn’t sure what Treinen’s recovery timeline might look like, but since Treinen is for now just resting his arm, it appears as though testing didn’t reveal any structural damage.  Treinen has generally been able to avoid any elbow-related injuries during his long career, though he missed half of last season due to forearm tightness and pretty much all of the 2022-23 seasons recovering from shoulder and labrum surgeries.

Now in his sixth season with the Dodgers, Treinen has a 3.52 ERA, 25% strikeout rate, 10% walk rate, and a 50% grounder rate over 23 relief innings.  The K% is Treinen’s lowest since his first season (2020) in Los Angeles, though his groundball rate is on pace to be his highest over a full season since 2021, and a throwback to Treinen’s days a more of a grounder specialist early in his career with the Nationals.

As Chen notes, the Dodgers have been using Treinen in lower-leverage roles lately, as he struggled earlier in the year.  Los Angeles’ bullpen has been in flux for pretty much all season due to injuries, as Treinen is one of eight relievers (and 12 pitchers total) on the team’s IL.  Though it all, the Dodgers’ relief corps has remained quite solid, entering Sunday’s action ranked 10th of 30 teams in bullpen ERA.

Right-hander Chayce McDermott was called up from Triple-A as the corresponding move for Treinen, and the Dodgers’ IL might get slightly shorter with the impending activation of Brock Stewart.  The right-hander is four games into a minor league rehab assignment, and after pitching on both Friday and Saturday, Stewart could be back in the Los Angeles pen by Monday.

Injuries have long been a subplot of Stewart’s career, as a variety of health woes have limited him to 135 games and 188 2/3 innings since he made his MLB debut way back in 2016.  He underwent a shoulder surgery last September that delayed his 2026 debut until May 5, and Stewart pitched in only two games before a bone spur in his left foot led to his latest stint on the 15-day IL.

In another injury update, Chen wrote that Blake Snell threw off the bullpen mound to a standing catcher yesterday.  It’s a small but noteworthy step considering that Snell is a little over a month removed from a NanoNeedle procedure to remove loose bodies from his left elbow.  Snell is on the 60-day IL so he can’t return until after the All-Star break at the earliest, but he appears to be nearing readiness for a proper bullpen session.
