The HBO Game of Thrones prequel returns for Season 3 on June 21, with Team Black and Team Green heading toward some of the bloodiest battles in Targaryen history. After Season 2 ended with armies marching, dragons preparing for battle, and Aegon fleeing King’s Landing, the new season will bring back many of the show’s major players.

Here is your guide to the cast of House of the Dragon Season 3, from returning characters to new faces.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Cast

Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen

Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen in 'House of the Dragon'

Heading into Season 3, Rhaenyra appears ready to take a more aggressive approach. With new dragonriders on her side and Alicent offering her a path into King's Landing, she may be closer than ever to the throne. However, the war is also growing larger, bloodier and harder to control.

Outside of House of the Dragon, they are known for their work in Truth Seekers, Mothering Sundayand will appear in the Tom Cruisefilm Digger in 2026.

Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen

Heading into Season 3, Daemon has reaffirmed his loyalty to Rhaenyra after his strange and unsettling time at Harrenhal. With the Riverlands becoming a major battleground, his army and his dragon Caraxes could be crucial to Team Black's next moves.

Outside of House of the Dragon, Smith is best known for playing the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who and Prince Philip in The Crown.

Heading into Season 3, Alicent is politically isolated. Aemond has pushed her aside, Aegon has fled King’s Landing, and her attempt to make peace with Rhaenyra may already be falling apart. Her priority now appears to be protecting Helaena and surviving the consequences of Team Green’s choices.

Outside of House of the Dragon, Cooke is known for Bates Motel, Slow Horses, and Sound of Metal.

Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen

Heading into Season 3, Aemond is one of the most dangerous figures in the war. With Vhagar at his command and Aegon out of the capital, he has the power to steer Team Green into an even more brutal phase of the Dance of the Dragons.

Outside of House of the Dragon, Mitchell is known for The Last Kingdom, Saltburn and Wuthering Heights.

Heading into Season 3, Aegon is no longer in King’s Landing. Larys helped him escape the capital in the Season 2 finale, warning that his life was in danger whether Team Green won or lost the war. His survival could complicate Alicent’s attempt to hand the city to Rhaenyra.

Outside of House of the Dragon, Glynn-Carney is known for Dunkirk and The King.

Phia Saban as Helaena Targaryen

Heading into Season 3, Helaena remains in King’s Landing under Aemond’s rule. Her relationship with her brother appears increasingly strained, especially after she tells him that he will not survive the war.

Heading into Season 3, Jace remains one of Rhaenyra’s most important allies, but his position is complicated by the rise of the Dragonseeds. With new riders joining their cause and the Battle of the Gullet looming, Jace may have to prove his value in a war that is quickly becoming more dangerous.

Outside of House of the Dragon, Collett is known for Dolittle, Galavant and Dunkirk.

Bethany Antonia as Baela Targaryen

Heading into Season 3, Baela remains one of Team Black’s most valuable young players. With Jace preparing for a more dangerous phase of the war and the Velaryon fleet facing a major threat, Baela may be pulled closer to the front lines.

Outside of House of the Dragon, Toussaint is known for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Before We Die and Small Axe.

Heading into Season 3, Alyn is positioned to become even more important as Corlys’ fleet faces the threat of the Triarchy. With the Velaryon line shaken by Rhaenys’ death, Alyn may have to prove he can carry the family name into the next stage of the war.

Outside of House of the Dragon, Salim is known for Raised by Wolves, Assassin’s Creed Origins and Jamestown.

Heading into Season 3, Criston appears shaken by what the war has become. After Rook’s Rest and the horrors of marching through the Crownlands, he may continue to question the faith and purpose that once drove him, even as he remains one of Team Green’s most important military figures.

Rhys Ifans returns as Otto Hightower, Alicent’s father and the seasoned political operator who helped place Aegon on the Iron Throne. In Season 2, Otto was removed as Hand of the King after clashing with Aegon over how to handle the war.

Outside of House of the Dragon, Ifans is known for Notting Hill, The Amazing Spider-Man and The King’s Man.

Matthew Needham as Larys Strong

Heading into Season 3, Larys has helped Aegon escape King’s Landing, betting his own future on the injured king’s survival. With Aemond in control of the capital and Alicent trying to hand the city to Rhaenyra, Larys may be one of the few people who knows where Aegon really is.

Outside of House of the Dragon, Needham is known for Napoleon, Sherlock and The Ritual.

Heading into Season 3, Gwayne remains tied to Team Green’s military campaign. As Aemond takes a harsher grip on power and Alicent loses influence, Gwayne could find himself caught between loyalty to his family and the reality of the war they are fighting.

Outside of House of the Dragon, Fox is known for Slow Horses, Victor Frankensteinand The Three Musketeers.

Jefferson Hall as Tyland and Jason Lannister

Heading into Season 3, both brothers could become more important to the war effort. Tyland secured the Triarchy’s ships in the Season 2 finale, giving Team Green a way to challenge Corlys Velaryon’s blockade, while Jason’s army adds another major force against Rhaenyra.

Kieran Bew as Hugh Hammer
