The best things to eat at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

No need to re-litigate the quality of airport food. It once was bad, now it’s improving.

Last week, we explored the restaurant options at Midway. Now we look at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, one of the busiest in the world.

By virtue of O’Hare serving roughly five times the passengers every day as Midway, there should be better dining options, right?

I think that’s a correct assumption.

Some of the city’s most acclaimed chefs—if measured by James Beard Awards—now have outposts at O’Hare. Same caveats apply: You’re paying way more here. But if you care about ingredients coming from local farms, not industrial factories, you’ve got options at O’Hare.

Tortas Frontera (Terminals 1, 3, 5) — This is my favorite place to eat at O’Hare. In fact, I think highly of it to place it on The New York Times‘ 25 Best Restaurants in Chicago list. Why? A great restaurant for me is one that exceeds expectation. The crispy torta sandwiches are the headliners. And that you can get the same tortilla soup here as you could at Rick Bayless’s Frontera Grill is a very good thing. Publican Tavern (Terminal 3) — One Off Hospitality’s flagship restaurant is rechristened at Terminal 3 as a compact version of its West Loop beer hall. You won’t find the more ambitious downtown dishes, but several classic appear at the airport: their brined and wood-roasted half chicken and fries is a highlight. The Dearborn (Terminal 5) — In April I ate 10 fish & chips for this station. I swore it off afterward. Then I saw The Dearborn, featured in my previous segment, had a location at O’Hare, and immediately I fell back in the crispy fish rabbit hole. Well, it’s pretty great, what can I say? Tocco (Terminal 5) — The Winnetka spot is serving its Italian cooking at Terminal 5. The menu isn’t as extensive as the restaurant, obviously, but if you’re craving bolognese and flatbreads, Tocco will scratch that itch. Butcher & The Burger (Terminal 5) — There are burgers available at the many McDonald’s at O’Hare. But if you’re looking for something more bespoke, perhaps something a touch healthier, Lincoln Park’s Butcher & The Burger has a location here, with a solid turkey burger. Auntie Anne’s (Terminals 1, 2) — My guiltiest of pleasures. I think there’s no chain fast food menu item greater than Auntie Anne’s pretzel dog. The pretzels are baked right on site, wrapping around a Nathan’s Famous all-beef hot dog. No shame, no regrets.
