Video and other materials from the day undercover police officers and ATF agents shot two men who allegedly attempted to rob them in suburban Country Club Hills were released by Chicago’s police watch dog agency on Thursday.
The incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m. on June 10 when “several individuals” approached a car full of Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents who were doing an operation in Country Club Hills and attempted to rob them.
One of the ATF agents fired their gun while in the car, shooting one of the suspects, COPA said.
A Chicago police officer who was assisting the ATF agents with the operation and witnessed the attempted robbery began a pursuit in an unmarked vehicle of a suspect who fled. Both the officer and the suspect exited their vehicles, and shortly after the officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect.
Both of the men who were shot survived and the charges against them were dropped by federal prosecutors after witness video — that was included in the materials released on Tuesday — contradicted statements made by officers involved in the shooting.
The video also gave a look at what neighbors experienced when the shots rang out.
In the video, you can see an undercover officer in plain clothes kneeling on the man who then manages to get out of the officer’s grasp before trying to run off. That’s when the officer fires his gun.
Recordings of 911 calls from the incident were also among the materials released by COPA.
“He said he heard about 10 shots and he’s still shooting,” one 911 caller can be heard saying.
Another 911 caller told dispatchers “there’s a shooting on Martin Court right now, looks like the guy is a cop.”
