Residents of apartment building damaged in Merrillville tornado move out ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Several apartment buildings in northwest Indiana have been condemned following the Merrillville tornado, forcing residents to find new housing.

Some residents returned to their units Thursday trying to salvage what they can and are now looking for a new place to rebuild their lives.

Yolanda Stokes loaded up her U-Haul truck and moved out of her apartment a week after her building was hit by an EF-2 tornado that tore through northwest Indiana.

“It’s been very very overwhelming,” she said. “I’ve been crying every day.”

Debris was still scattered all over her complex at Mount Vernon Arms Apartments. She and other tenants were told they must move out by Friday due to the extensive damage.

“The building is very unstable,” she said. “I did get water leaks due to the rain that we had currently, and you just hear the cracks and creaks so it’s very scary.”

Judy Edwards has called this place home for 20 years. She doesn’t know what the future holds but will stay with her daughter for the time being.

“It’s pretty bad, you know, trying to get everything together,” said Edwards. “Really right now I really don’t know –it’s up in the air like a lot of stuff going on.”

The town of Merrillville is helping residents with resources and support to relocate. At least three apartment complexes have been deemed unsafe and uninhabitable.

“Right now our fire marshal is working with the property manager to see what units are available within the town where they might be able to move into immediately,” said Chas Reilly, Town of Merrillville Media Officer. “The Red Cross does have a temporary shelter available for anybody who’s been affected.”

NIPSCO said power has been restored for nearly all customers in the region. Crews are still working to restore power for around 900 customers.

The Town Council will hold a special meeting on Friday to vote on approving funding to bring in contractors for debris removal.

“A lot of work has been done, but there’s just trees down everywhere so many,” he said. “To see how many buildings have been destroyed it’s just remarkable and our hearts just go out to all these people who have been affected by this,” he said.
