We all love a good come-up. Someone beating expectations and leaving everyone impressed.
That might also be the best way to describe Keaton Wagler’s 2025-26 season.

His parents met while playing basketball, his sister won a junior college national championship, and the game was also played by his older brother, great-grandfather, grandfather, and uncle.
But he took an unconventional path for a player of his caliber, choosing to remain with his local AAU and high school programs instead of joining the shoe-company circuits that typically produce top prospects. While his production and winning resume. were impossible to ignore, skepticism about his physical tools caused many college recruiters to underestimate him.
247Sports ranked him No. 261 nationally, labeling him a three-star recruit with expectations of becoming a mid-major player. Illinois didn’t see it that way.
The program reportedly evaluates recruits through four pillars: positional size, basketball IQ, basketball character, and no skill deficiencies.
“We thought he was 4-of-4, which is very rare,” said Tyler Underwood.
And Illinois bought him in.
And it did not take long for Keaton Wagler to gain attention.
In his first conference game against Ohio State, he went off for 23 points and 5 assists. Then came 19 points and 10 rebounds against Nebraska, followed by 22 points and 8 rebounds against Missouri. Suddenly, freshman Keaton Wagler was entering some very fun conversations.
By New Year’s, he had established himself as a first-round pick in a stacked 2026 NBA Draft. By the end of January, he was a lock for the lottery.
It was because on January 24, Wagler produced a masterpiece and dropped 46 points on 13-of-17 shooting from the field and 9-of-11 from three at Mackey Arena against Purdue. It was one of the best performances by a freshman in college basketball history, and at the very least one of the most memorable.

— FOX College Hoops (@CBBonFOX) January 24, 2026His beautiful stepback, his three-point stroke, and honestly, his ability to torch teams despite not being the strongest athlete on the floor were all on full display.
He was showing shades of Tyrese Haliburton: a taller guard with an innate ability to control the pace of the game and change speeds whenever he wanted. Wagler isn’t the passer Haliburton is, but he’s no slouch in that department and is the better rebounder.

— FOX College Hoops (@CBBonFOX) January 25, 2026As the Big Ten season rolled on, so did Keaton’s momentum. His stock was rising at a frightening pace.
His Illinois team never won any silverware, but they came close.
The Fighting Illini finished second in the Big Ten during the regular season and entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed in the South Region.
In the NCAA Tournament, Keaton averaged 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists per game, while also contributing nearly a steal and a block per contest. Despite shooting just 37% from the field, he led Illinois to its first Final Four appearance since 2005.
It was a massive achievement for Wagler, who had now established to the entire nation that he was one of them ones.
From No. 261 in the recruiting rankings to a potential top-five pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, everyone in Illinois got to witness what Keaton Wagler could do.

— FOX College Hoops (@CBBonFOX) February 28, 2026“I’m tired of hearing about his high school [recruiting] ranking, I’m tired of hearing about he’s 170 pounds when he got here, and he’s physically skinny and weak,” Brad Underwood said, “He’s none of those things anymore. If the story is that everybody missed on him, we didn’t. I’m tired of hearing that, too. We found him. He fit us.”

Jeremy Woo (ESPN):
“Keaton Wagler’s swift ascent as a prospect has been spurred by his positional size, plus shooting, and quick decision-making, allowing him to drive winning basketball at both guard positions. Many NBA executives are bullish on his developmental trajectory, feel for the game and long-term upside, often citing his room for physical and ball-handling improvement as a realistic pathway to a star ceiling.”
Jonathan Wasserman (Bleacher Report):
“Keaton Wagler is right now earning looks in the No. 5-9 range with his crafty creation, special shotmaking, high IQ and adaptable game.
Wagler will be considered interchangeable with his size and shooting, but he showed enough off-the-dribble navigation, passing, pull-ups and floaters at Illinois for the Kings to feel confident that they can give him initiator duties.”
Kevin O’Connor (Yahoo Sports):
“Keaton Wagler showed up at Illinois as a four-star recruit with no expectations of becoming a one-and-done. But he quickly became the orchestrator of a high-powered Illinois offense with his high-IQ playmaking and crafty scoring. Then he scored 46 at Purdue against a top-ranked team in the country — the most points by any freshman in Big Ten history. Then he kept rolling, and led the team to an unexpected Final Four appearance. Now he’s a lottery lock, but he’s a quirky player in that he logged zero dunks. To become an NBA star, Wagler needs to overcome a lack of traditional athleticism. But the best case is that his feel for the game is enough for him to continue ascending.”
Sam Vecenie (The Athletic):
“Keaton Wagler is unequivocally this year’s biggest draft riser, maybe the biggest draft riser in the one-and-done era with a crafty, creative handle and outstanding feel for the game.
He’s not particularly impactful on defense, but early in the season, when he was playing more consistently off the ball, he showed more consistent instincts for crashing the offensive glass and creating action plays on defense.
There is some concern about Wagler’s athleticism, as he’s not very quick-twitch with his first step, and he has very little upward explosiveness. He’s also not all that strong yet. But he’s clearly a late-bloomer whose frame gives him some room to grow. I’ve gotten anywhere from No. 2 to No. 9 in the last month when I ask NBA executives about where Wagler ranks on their personal boards; it’s clear that he’s made an impression while leading the nation’s No. 1 offense.”

If the Chicago Bulls pivot away from the top four or trade up for another top-10 pick and draft Keaton Wagler, is it safe to assume that Josh Giddey’s time in Chicago will soon be up?
While Wagler and Giddey would make for a very intriguing backcourt of tall guards who are offensively gifted and willing rebounders, the lack of defense does scare me. I believe Keaton Wagler competes hard enough to impact a defensive possession or two, but both of them would need at least one plus defender next to them.
On the flip side, a pairing of Keaton Wagler and Matas Buzelis? Now that sounds fun.
Matas is exactly the type of 3-and-D player you’d want alongside Keaton. He can take on tougher defensive assignments while also rim-running for a guard who loves to pass off the dribble and create opportunities when attacking the lane.

— ALBERT GHIM (@albertoeghim) April 29, 2026When it comes to Bryson Graham, he’s clearly intrigued enough by Wagler to bring him in for a pre-draft workout and get a closer look. Based on Graham’s reported preference for size, length, athleticism, and physicality, Keaton probably checks two-and-a-half of those boxes.
So if Graham ultimately drafts him despite not fitting the mold perfectly, does that mean he views Wagler as such a special prospect that he’s willing to bend his own rules?
"Teams that are having success are very good [on defense]…I refer to it as guys who have 'SLAP':SizeLengthAthleticismPhysicality…and that's gonna be felt on the defensive side of the ball."– Bryson Graham
— CHGO Bulls (@CHGO_Bulls) May 6, 2026Beyond that, the Bulls reportedly wanted to replicate what the Indiana Pacers built during the 2024-25 season. Whether that philosophy came from AKME or the Reinsdorfs, drafting Keaton Wagler—a prospect ESPN describes as having a Tyrese Haliburton-type ceiling, would certainly be a good place to start.
And obviously, moving from Champaign to Chicago won’t be that hard.
