It’s been four years since Charles briefly saw his Californian grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet. They came for the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in the summer of 2022. Archie was just three, and Lilibet had her first birthday party in the garden of the Sussex’s home, Frogmore Cottage. That visit was the last time their grandpa saw them. And, of all the heartache this bitter rift has caused, to be deprived of your grandchildren must surely be the worst.
So what’s brought about this change from Harry? Last year, after losing his appeal over his security, he gave a furious interview in which he said he couldn’t see a world in which he would bring his wife and children back to the UK. He claimed the King wouldn’t speak to him because of the security issue. But, in the midst of his anger, he suddenly sounded a conciliatory note.
Rather magnanimously, many would say pig-headedly, he said he had “forgiven his family” for the many disagreements between them. Oblivious, it would seem, to the deep hurt he had caused by publishing his scathing memoir Spare or filming a tell-all series for Netflix, he said he would love a reconciliation because there was no point in fighting anymore. Life, he declared, is precious. Hallelujah! A moment of clarity from the troubled Duke of Sussex.
Perhaps now, a year later, he is making good his words. Because he’s right. There is no point in continuing hostilities, especially as the children begin to grow up and realise that theirs is a strangely depleted world when it comes to family.
It is, though, an extraordinary turn of events, and we can only assume that Harry has been given a rock-solid assurance – either temporary or permanent – that he and his family will be given proper security.
In my view, he must also have been given an assurance that if his father agrees to meet the children, he will welcome Meghan as well. Understandably, Harry would surely not countenance his wife being excluded. He was affronted when he was asked not to take her to Balmoral on the day of the late Queen‘s death and was only placated when told that the Princess of Wales wasn’t going either.
In the years that have followed, Meghan has quietly tiptoed in and out of the transit areas of Heathrow or Gatwick Airports en route to some of her visits abroad. But the hot money was on her never returning to the UK itself. Perhaps she is brave to do so. Opinion polls suggest that, aside from Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, she is the least popular member of the Royal Family. But she will undoubtedly be shielded from any hostile crowd. Harry and Meghan are coming to mark the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games in Birmingham. And, amongst the Invictus community, Meghan is still a star and can expect the warmest of welcomes.
For the King, though, this will be the most delicate balancing act. If he makes peace with his youngest son, his loyal and steadfast older son will have his nose royally put out of joint. There is absolutely no sign of any thaw in the brotherly feud.
But Charles surely deserves to know his tiny grandchildren, and they, too, deserve to be loved by him and to begin to understand their heritage.
