Alabama sprinter Samuel Ogazi set a new collegiate record of 43.38 seconds and took home the 400-meter national title for the second year in a row last Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
The junior’s record time surpassed the previous NCAA 400-meter record of 43.61 seconds, which was held by former Southern California sprinter and four-time NCAA champion Michael Norman.
Ogazi also set a new Nigerian national record, school record and the fourth-fastest time in world history en route to his second straight 400-meter crown.
“Samuel’s national title defense and collegiate record in the 400 meters were tremendous highlights for our program this week,” head coach Dan Waters said.
With the feat, he became the fourth runner since 2000 to repeat as 400-meter champion and the first Alabama runner to do so since Kirani James in 2010 and 2011.
The win also saw Ogazi complete a clean sweep of both the indoor and outdoor 400-meter national titles. He took home the indoor title in March with a time of 44.57 seconds, tying him for the third-fastest time in NCAA history and the fourth-fastest in world indoor history.
Two fellow SEC competitors joined Ogazi on the podium. Georgia freshmen Jonathan Simms and Sidi Njie completed the all-SEC podium with personal best times of 43.92 and 44.20 seconds, respectively. Seven total SEC runners took part in the 400-meter finals after just two took part last year.
Alabama’s men’s team ended its season with a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, an improvement from last season’s 26th-place finish.
