On Monday, a 9-year-old boy named King Overton was pulled out of a SwimRVA Pool unresponsive on his first day of a swim camp. The boy later died in a hospital.
King was dropped off by his mother, Lataisha, to a SwimRVA pool that morning. SwimRVA is a non-profit in Virginia’s capital city that aims to promote water safety and education across several campuses in the greater Richmond area.
At around 2:30 PM, King was pulled from the pool of SwimRVA North unresponsive. Other children from the camp told their parents that this was during a free swim period, and that the pool was crowded during the time.
Shortly after, Henrico County police were notified, and they arrived on scene. They notified Lataisha of what happened to her son. Both SwimRVA and the police have refrained from calling the incident a drowning. The police are working with medical professionals to determine the cause of death.
According to Lataisha, SwimRVA has not communicated any details with her about the incident.
“I don’t know anything,” Lataisha said about her son’s death to local media. “I just know that they found my baby at the bottom of a pool. She also said that she intentionally told SwimRVA staff that King didn’t know how to swim when she dropped him off.
A press release on SwimRVA’s website reads:
“It is with profound sadness that we report that, at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 15, a participant in our summer camp was unresponsive after being removed from the pool.
Pool staff immediately began CPR and continued lifesaving efforts until paramedics and [Henrico County Division of Fire] personnel arrived and assumed care. The child was transported to the hospital, where he passed away.
Our hearts are with the child’s family and loved ones during this loss. We extend our deepest condolences and are keeping them and all those affected by this tragedy in our thoughts.
We are cooperating fully with the appropriate authorities as they review the circumstances surrounding this incident.”
The organization closed its doors early following the incident and cancelled a meet it was to host.
People who know King described him as witty and full of life.
“He was the love of our lives our heart and joy and our reason for so much,” Lataisha shared on social media.
