Georgia blanks Texas in College World Series elimination game to stay alive, end Longhorns’ season ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

Georgia is still alive in the College World Series. The Bulldogs topped the Longhorns in an elimination game where both sides delivered excellent pitching performances. The Bulldogs won 2-0.

UGA scored just 2 runs, but it was enough as the Dawg pitchers kept Texas off the board. Tre Phelps broke the scoring ice in the 5th inning with an RBI double. It ended an 0-for-24 drought for Georgia with men on base.

Georgia added a run on a wild sequence in the 7th inning. Rylan Lujo hit a flyball to shallow left field. Texas shortstop Adrian Rodriguez caught it amid a collision with left fielder Anthony Pack Jr. The Dawgs were aggressive, sending Ryan Black to tag up. Rodriguez made a great throw, but Black managed to touch the plate before Carson Tinney tagged his upper body.

As the final score shows, both sides were stellar on the mound.

Texas coach Jim Schlossnagle turned to Luke Harrison as his starter. Harrison gave the Longhorns 5.2 innings, striking out 11 Bulldogs while allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits and 4 walks. He logged 100 pitches, throwing 60 strikes.

Sam Cozart handled the final 3.1 innings for Texas. He allowed 1 run on 3 hits, notching 6 Ks.

Dylan Vigue got the start for Georgia. He went 4 scorless innings, striking out 8 while giving up 2 hits and issuing 2 walks. Wes Johnson made the switch to Justin Byrd in the 5th inning.

Byrd guided the Dawgs the rest of the way. He pitched 5 shutout innings, allowing just 2 hits while striking out 4 on 62 pitches.

Georgia now faces Oklahoma on Wednesday. The Bulldogs can force a winner-take-all game on Thursday if they win Wednesday. The Sooners, who beat Georgia on Monday, can advance to the CWS Finals with a win on Wednesday or Thursday. UGA needs to defeat OU twice to reach the championship series.
