I’m certainly no tennis expert, some would say I probably don’t even know how to even play, and that’s why I was intrigued when I was given the opportunity to take a first hands look at the Pongbot Pace S Pro. Now I’ve looked at a lot of various training equipment over the years, equipment like those work out bots that help watch your form and tell you how to position your body, and I’ll be honest, whenever a company starts saying like “AI-powered” and “smart training,” I usually become a little skeptical. Not because I am against AI, but more often than not, it’s a false claim wrapped around a product that doesn’t really do anything special, they plaster that badge on there to make people believe they are getting the next best thing!
Unboxing.
I’m not quite sure what I was expecting, but the unboxing and initial setup ended up being completely painless. Once you remove the packaging and a few pieces of protective foam, you’ll find that the Pace S Pro arrives almost entirely assembled. There are no complicated instructions, no bags of hardware, and nothing that needs to be screwed together. Inside the box, you’ll find everything needed to get started. Along with the Pace S Pro itself, you’ll find the battery, two P Station S units, the P Tag S tracking devices, a remote control, power adapter, and charging cable.
All I had to do was pull the machine out of the box, install the battery, attach the hopper, and it was ready to go. Honestly, I’ve had products that were far less advanced than this require significantly more setup time.
Considering how much technology is packed into the Pace S Pro, I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly I was able to get everything up and running. It’s clear that PongBot put some thought into making the setup process as user friendly as possible, and that’s something I think a lot of people will appreciate, I know I did.
Build Quality & Design.
At first glance, the Pace S Pro looks like a premium piece of equipment, just kinda how I would expect out of a new tennis ball launcher. It has a clean, modern look that feels more like a modern piece of training equipment than just your traditional ball machine.
The Pace S Pro features built-in wheels and a suitcase style telescoping handle for transportation, which is important because this isn’t exactly something you’re going to casually carry across multiple courts. The weight is certainly there and it’s not exactly the easiest thing to carry so the handle and wheels were a much needed addition to the design!
The Ball capacity is rated at over 150 balls, but I only had 60 and I could have easily added twice what I did so I’d say they are pretty spot on with that and battery life is advertised at up to 8 hours of training, which is impressive for players who spend entire afternoons on the court.
One thing I noticed that I thought was a pretty smart thing that the team at PonBot did was they added these spring loaded feet on the bottom that help you have a level platform on even the most cracked up courts, really ensuring you’ll get the most consistent shots back to back.
AI Features.
I try to not listen to online speculations as I’ve been burnt many times but now after using it I have to say that this is where the Pace S Pro separates itself from most competitors.
The machine uses 100Hz movement tracking technology that can monitor player movement with an acclaimed `sub-10cm accuracy. The Drills can be shared and downloaded from other users, making it more of a social activity.
You can customize drills, adjust speed, spin, trajectory, intervals, and save training sessions for future use. Not only on the app but with the remote as well you can adjust these parameters as well. They will have over the air updates and also allow PongBot to add features and improvements over time.
User Experience.
When I got told about my chances at taking a first hand look at the PongBot Pace S Pro the first thing that went through my mind was that it has been years since I’ve played tennis, how badly could this go haha. My mom used to play a lot when I was younger and I remember going to matches with her and playing after school all the time. Fast forward a lot of years like 15+ and tennis was kind of forgotten about, until now. All I had left to do now was go out and buy some rackets and balls for myself and the family.
So I made a huge mistake, a rookie mistake, that’s for sure. I charged up the battery, but I wanted my first experiences with this thing to be on a court, so I packed up the family and out we went, well we got there and of course it needed and update, unfortunately I life in the sticks and didn’t have good enough service so back home we went, fortunately the team at PongBot had mobility in mind when they put this together. Because of the wheels that roll very smoothly, they also have a suitcase style collapsible handle making it easy to move from your car to the court.
Ahhh here we go, it has been a weekend now as it’s been raining all week but we are updated, have a full battery and headed back out to the courts! Now to say we are beginners is an understatement haha, it’s been at least ten years since I’ve played and my kids and wife are in the same boat, so lets see what this thing can do for us!
So right away the app is super easy to use, and all the training modes are well labeled and easy to find folders. Nothing is worse than a messy app that’s hard to navigate so it was refreshing to see a clean and organized app that’s easy to use for everyone, and there is a remote, so if you don’t want to have to use your phone you can control it with the remote and still access your different training modes.
So one thing that really stood out to us is the consistency, for us beginners to be able to have the ball keep coming back to the same spot makes the ability to focus on the simple things like just hitting the ball, my kids certainly benefited from this the most, we could control how fast the ball was coming out, how much loft was on it and where it was going. We put one kid in each corner and had the Pace S Pro take turns between the kids, rotating to each one and giving them time between shots. My wife and I used a very similar setup but were able to increase the speed making it a little more difficult and it was perfect for our skill level. Just for the sake of testing we put it in one of the more experienced modes, my wife stepped aside and I tried to tackle this one on myself, and to say I am so unfit is to say the least, this machine had me running around like a chicken with its head cut off, holy cow it was intense.
So to say our first day out as a family with the PongBot Pace S Pro was a success would be an understatement. Obviously we aren’t trying to go pro here but to learn the fundamentals and be able to play a good game can absolutely be taught to you by this one simple machine that fits in the back of your car, and at the very least it was a great time out with the family and kind of just became a thing that we do now. If I had to find some things about the Pace S Pro that could be refined a little bit would basically be the mobility of it, they gave you an awesome suitcase style handle but the way to pick it up to put it in your trunk is a little awkward, it’s still completely manageable. Such a minor thing to complain about when dealing with such a capable piece of equipment.

The best thing I have to say about the PongBot Pace S Pro is that it doesn’t feel like a gimmick, it’s a machine made for a specific purpose and it does just that! That and my family and I truly did have a great time out there with it!
So many companies just toss the word “AI” into their marketing because it’s what everyone is talking about right now. PongBot actually uses it in a proper way and utilizes it to maximize your experience and genuinely improves the overall experience.
If you’re a casual player who only hits every once in a while, this is probably more machine than you need. But if you’re serious about improving your footwork, consistency, conditioning, and match readiness all without having to depend on a hitting partner every time then the Pace S Pro offers some really helpful features that your traditional ball machines just don’t have.
Would I say it is perfect? No. But it’s close, It’s still a serious investment, and the AI features will certainly be more intuitive for some players than others. That said, from everything I’ve encountered in my time using the Pace S Pro I have to say that PongBot has built one heck of a machine to help the most novice player to even the most experienced in their tennis game!
