A “powerful” storm system moving into the Chicago area Wednesday will bring multiple rounds of thunderstorms, including the “threat for a dangerous outbreak of damaging tornadoes,” the National Weather Service warned.
The looming risk of severe weather comes as showers and pockets of heavy rain moved from west to east Tuesday morning in northern Illinois, with rain expected to last through the morning and into the afternoon.
“One or two isolated storms possible later today,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, of Tuesday’s forecast. As of 8 a.m., live Doppler 5 radar showed a band of rain stretching from Joliet to Kenosha.
Temperatures Tuesday will remain unseasonably cool, Roman said, with high temperatures in the 70s. Temperatures will stay in the 70s Wednesday, Roman said, as multiple rounds of potentially severe thunderstorms move in.
“Tomorrow is the day we need to be concerned with,” Roman said, of the severe weather risk. “Wednesday still on track for the potential of another severe weather outbreak with strong tornadoes possible. Right now, looks like 2 rounds of storm potential.”
In the early morning hours through early afternoon, widespread showers and heavy downpours were expected as part of the first round, with gusty winds and focalized flooding possible. At that time, a large part of the Chicago area will be at a “slight” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level two of five.
Areas to the far northeast and on the Illinois-Wisconsin border will be under a “marginal” risk, which ranks as level one. In Ottawa, Kankakee and northwest Indiana, the severe weather risk will be “enhanced,” or level three.
Starting about 3 p.m. and through the evening, a second round storms could develop, Roman said. At that time, “all weather hazards” will be possible, including the potential for strong tornadoes, damaging hail and damaging winds.
Through about 9 p.m., the entire Chicago area will be under threat of severe weather, according to the Storm Prediction Center. In counties to the north, the risk was “marginal.” In Chicago, northwest Indiana and counties to the west, were higher, at an “enhanced” risk.
The central section of Illinois — including in Kankakee, southern Will and southern LaSalle Counties in Illinois and some parts of northwest Indiana — will be at the greatest risk of severe weather, with “strong tornadoes” possible, Roman said. Those parts will be under “moderate” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level four of five.
The widespread waves of thunderstorms and showers could lead to “torrential” rain at times, the NWS said, leading to flash flooding and low visibility.
As much as one, two or even three inches or more of rain could fall in a short amount of time, Roman said.
“Prepare now if you live in a flood prone area,” the NWS said.
The potential severe weather follows an outbreak of tornadoes that swept across the Chicago area last week, with as many as 17 confirmed tornadoes in northeast Illinois.
