Prawn sandwiches, Percy Pigs and pants, is there anything that M&S can’t do well?
Their current abundance of wines really impresses. Yes, there are the standard pinot grigios and malbecs, but also on offer are some more esoteric wines and styles: orange wines, pet nats, chilled reds, and little-known grape varieties from lesser-known regions.
All of this amounts to greater opportunities for us, the customer, to discover something new. As M&S buyer Celani Dingwall explained to me: “We’re focused on making the M&S wine aisle feel like a place of discovery – bringing customers new, exciting and sometimes unexpected wines.”
They’ve long had a reputation as the high street retailer that represents quality at a more premium price point, but they’re managing to source that quality with their “entry-level” wines too. Not an easy task. I was genuinely impressed by the wines available at £10 and under. This is an achievement when you remember that a £7 wine is now the new £5 wine, thanks to our government’s unrelentingly punishing taxation system.
Going through my notes, there were lots of great wines and very few swerves, which makes selecting just 10 a challenge. Not included in the list, but highly recommended as well is the Trouble Cloudy Rosé, a charming wine that’s just begging to be enjoyed with friends in the sunshine. An incredible value rosé from Italy, M&S Italian Rosato, it’s available in both a bottle and pouch (the 1.5 litre pouch makes it a remarkable £6 per bottle equivalent).
The Juanico Albarino is a very enticing pour from Uruguay. And there is a really strong offering of English wines across the board too, I particularly like the M&S English Lily.
See these suggestions as an enjoyable jumping-off point, providing a little inspiration and encouragement to enjoy a broader range of grapes and styles.
M&S Crémant de Bordeaux Blanc Brut, France, NV
£11, M&S (in-store) and Ocado, 12% ABV
Crémant’s popularity continues to grow, and it’s easy to understand why when you taste this. Made by exactly the same method as Champagne, this Bordeaux beauty offers wonderful value for money for a well-made and enjoyable sparkler. The elegant bubbles deliver aromas and flavours of baked apples, zests of lemon and oven-warmed brioche with fresh, uplifting acidity.
M&S’s Crémant de Bordeaux, left, is wonderful value for moneyM&S Prestige Cava Brut, Spain, 2022
£9, M&S (in-store) and Ocado, 11% ABV
Cava is one of the most underappreciated wines in the world, it has the enticing joy of a well-made sparkling wine (made with the same method as Champagne), with a wonderful Mediterranean twist. Hailing from the region of Catalunya, close to Barcelona, this sparkler has a beautiful creamy mousse delivering layers of soft white peaches, green apples and biscuity finish.
M&S Élegance Coteaux du Giennois, Loire, France, 2023
£12, M&S (in-store) and Ocado, 12.5%
If, like me, you adore Sancerre, but not the price tag, then this is the wine for you. It comes from a little-known, underappreciated appellation very close to Sancerre and is the perfect switch whether you’re a sauvignon blanc lover or not. Expect pure citrus leanness alongside delicate notes of orchard blossom, and a clean, steely mineral finish.
M&S Found Len de L’El, Gaillac, France, 2024
£9.50, M&S (in-store) and Ocado, 12% ABV
Gaillac is one of those wondrous French regions that few people know about; it’s peppered with stunning villages, a beguiling landscape and wonderful wine. Len de L’El or “Loin de l’Oeil” (as it’s known locally) is a rare grape variety found in this region, and it’s a delight to see it on the shelves. It’s full of notes of golden pears, springtime blossoms and a flash of almond. It would be wonderful with a platter of roast chicken, buttered Jersey Royals and the last of the English asparagus.
Found Ansonica, Sicily, 2024
£7.50, M&S (in-store) and Ocado, 11% ABV
I dream of visiting Sicily, and imagine drinking a chilled glass of this with some freshly caught fish, or a spread of local picky bits. This wine, made from an ancient grape variety, has real freshness, with aromas of zested citrus alongside a pretty white jasmine blossom lift. It’s characterful and enchanting for the money.
M&S La Balconne Organic Provence Rose, France, 2024
£16, M&S (in-store) and Ocado, 12.5% ABV
This might well be my premium pink of the Summer. It’s a beautiful blend of organically grown grenache, cinsault, mourvèdre, carignan, caladoc, syrah and rolle and is supple and soft. It delivers layers of peaches and cream, ripe strawberries, and an uplifting, sea-mist-freshness on the finish. You might whisper to your friends that it’s more angelic than its famous counterpart.
Côteaux Varois en Provence, France, 2025
£9.50, M&S (in-store) and Ocado, 12.5% ABV
The region of Côteaux Varois en Provence is located in the hills inland from the Mediterranean sea, with the altitude helping the grapes retain a real freshness. This is an elegant dry rosé with appealing, delicate notes of soft raspberries, golden nectarine and a zesty finish. It’s also available in a magnum, too, for your summer party needs.
Rosso Siciliano, Sicily, 2024
£6.50 M&S (in-store) and Ocado, 11% ABV
An uncomplicated red that can see you through a multitude of occasions throughout the summer, especially as it’s enjoyable to drink chilled. It’s a glassful of ripe summer red fruits with an appealing hint of sweet-spice on the finish.
M&S’s Rosso Siciliano, centre, is perfect chilledM&S Found Refosco, Veneto, Italy, 2025
£8.50, M&S (in-store) and Ocado, 12.5% ABV
This is exactly the sort of wine I want to drink with a table full of friends and a steaming bowl of ragu pasta. This medium-bodied red is brimming with sour cherries, fresh plums, hedgerow blackberries and a hint of wild oregano. It’s a juicy, fun and eminently versatile red.
M&S Maison Riveraine Fleurie, Beaujolais, France, 2025
£13 M&S (in-store) and Ocado, 12.5% ABV
Fleurie is one of 10 ‘Cru Villages’ in the Beaujolais region, meaning it’s from one of the best areas. Made from 100 per cent Gamay, this wine has a beautiful energy and perfumed joy about it, with layers of red fruits, darker ripe cherries, a sliver of coconut and wonderful freshness. It’d be delicious if drunk lightly chilled, too.
