Nearly 30,000 NIPSCO customers are still without power following the outbreak of severe storms and tornadoes in northwest Indiana earlier this week.
Crews hope to have services restored for residents in the Town of Merrillville by next Tuesday. The community there was hit with an EF-2 tornado on Thursday night.
“When it came the noise just kept getting louder and louder and louder,” said Merrilville resident Jackie Beeson. “I don’t know how to explain it because I’ve never seen anything like it and I hope I never do again.”
The 86-year-old hunkered down in the hallway of her home with her daughter to ride out the tornado.
“I threw myself over her to keep her down and I just heard it’s hitting us—it’s literally hitting us,” said Katherine Gaskey, Beeson’s daughter. “I called out to my heavenly Father and then I got silence and I’m like, it’s gone, thank you.”
Though the family’s home of nearly 30 years had extensive damage, both are thankful they made it out alive.
“The whole house, the roof, the sun porch is just ripped off the house — it’s not even there,” said Beeson. “The door broke off in the garage, three cars, all three of them are damaged.”
The Town of Merrillville said more than 200 homes and buildings were damaged or destroyed.
The Ross Township Trustee’s Office is open this weekend providing supplies to those affected by the tornado. They’re also collecting donations.
“We’re just grateful because people don’t have too, but because we’re a community trying to be there for one another, we greatly appreciate it,” said Councilwoman Shauna Haynes-Edwards, Town of Merrillville Ward 2.
The site also serves as the township’s pantry. People have been stopping by to drop off clothes, water, and nonperishable food items.
Volunteers plan to deliver hot meals and other supplies to residents in the hardest hit areas on Sunday.
“It’s devastating, it’s not just a small tornado, this is a devastating event,” said Trustee Eric A. Blackmon Sr., Ross Township Trustee. “But we’re here to help the residents and we’re not going nowhere.”
