Colorado Rockies 2026 Player’s Survey: Sterlin Thompson ...Middle East

Sport by : (Mile High Sports) -

Back in 2022, when the Colorado Rockies either failed or elected not to trade Trevor Story, there was much consternation.

This was, after all, just a short time after the Nolan Arenado fiasco. And it was not too long before the club would lose starting pitcher Jon Gray in a similar fashion.

It was reported far and wide, and inaccurately, that the Rockies lost Story for nothing. They should have traded him for whatever they could, the critics said. But many of them missed a key part. The Rockies didn’t lose Story for nothing. They got a draft pick. And with that pick, the 31st overall in the 2022 draft, they selected Sterlin Thompson out of the University of Florida. That was nearly four years ago.

The native of Longmont, Colorado, like most players, experienced his ups and downs in the minors. Playing all over the diamond, he often felt like a man without a position. But whenever he was right at the plate, he showed an incredibly advanced approach and bat-to-ball skills.

As such he slowly but surely made his way to Triple-A where he really began to shine in the first part of 2026, earning a call-up to MLB. He made his debut on May 15 against the San Francisco Giants and has quickly made himself a part of the regular lineup.

He is also the latest victim of our 2026 Colorado Rockies Player’s Survey:

What’s the most important part of your game day prep? Is it a workout, mental, music, food?

ST: Oh yeah, just the whole routine of it. Listening to some music for the game and just getting the right state of mind. Pregame meal…And it’s kind of just been all over the place between salmon and steak and yeah, that kind of gets me in the right state of mind to go out and play.

DC: What are you listening to?

ST: I like a little bit of house music. And then my walk-up song is Alice in Chains, right? I do like a little bit of that too.

DC: I was expecting something more like Alice in Chains at first and then you said house. Surprised me!

ST: Alice in Chains to ramp up but then like a little bit of house to chill out or whatever.

What’s your ideal road trip off day?

ST: Whenever we are somewhere near water, I love to go to the beach. I love to just spend an off day there or find some type of mall just to hang out and get some coffee and just, you know, shopping around. Not really have to buy anything but just like to go check the city out or whatever. From the hotel, there’s always been some nice areas. Like Newport Beach was awesome.

What’s your favorite play that you’ve ever made?

ST: In college I had a walk off against FSU. That was a crazy outlook first. My first official walk off home run. Play wise, I mean, robbing Mike Trout? I’ll remember that one.

DC: I like that walk off against FSU, robbing and Mike Trout. That’s pretty good. Well, you’ll be able to beat that, right?

ST: The goal is to have moments ahead to beat that right.

(Note: The day after this conversation, Thompson hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Cubs on June 10. This is probably a record for someone getting a new favorite moment after answering this question.)

Sterlin Thompson walks it off in the 9th for 3-2 win

What is your favorite play that you’ve ever seen? You had to have been there So not on TV, not on the radio.

ST: Goodman’s three run home run to tie it against the Giants.

DC: And you even kind get two moments in one cause Tovar went right after to walk it off.

ST: That’s right. You know, it’s been cool. It’s been two weeks here, but I’ve seen some crazy games, you know? That was a wild game. The Angels game where we came back? The ups and downs are crazy.

DC: So basically, that was probably instills in you early that idea that you’re never out of it right?

ST: Yeah, that’s pretty awesome.

Do you have a favorite baseball quote? It could be from a movie or a parent or a coach or a teammate.

ST: I like the Natural. “Pick me out a winner, Bobby.” Yeah, love that movie.

DC: Love it.

We will soon find out if the Rockies have done just that.
