UK hits 22°C – how long will the warm spell last? ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Temperatures are set to reach up to 27°C next week as warmer weather returns to the UK, the Met Office has forecast.

On Saturday, the highest recorded temperature hit 22.4°C in Kent, with an expectation of up to 26°C to come on Sunday in the southwest of England.

After a “brief blip” on Tuesday, the sunnier weather is expected to last throughout next week and “possibly drag out into the start of the following week, but mostly across the southwest,” a Met Office spokesperson told The i Paper.

The warmest weather will be felt in the southeast of England with “settled and warm” temperatures of up to 26 to 27°C, while the northwest is expected to rain with lower temperatures by next weekend.

What to expect this summer

The UK should not expect the “wall to wall sunshine” it experienced last month, the spokesperson added, with temperatures set to be “more comfortable” this week.

In May, the UK experienced its hottest bank holiday on record and an all-time May temperature record of 35.1°C was set in London.

Yellow and amber heat health alerts were also used for the first time this year.

The Met Office released its three-month summer outlook on 1 June, predicting higher chances of hotter weather for the rest of this month.

It also said there will be “an increased chance of heatwaves and heat-related impacts” for the rest of the summer running through to August.

There is some uncertainty about summer rainfalls, with MeteoGroup predicting a drier period while the Met Office said “the chance of a wet season are slightly higher than normal”.

This spring was extremely dry in some locations across southern and eastern England which received only a quarter to a third of their expected rainfall.

Some areas in Essex, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Dorset experienced one of their driest springs on record, while over 18,000 homes under South East Water had their supply cut off during the May heat wave due to high demand.

A ‘Godzilla’ El Niño

This return to warmth arrives as El Niño conditions have now developed in the tropical Pacific, the Met Office declared on Thursday.

Experts have warned that the current El Niño phase, which is expected to last for nine to 12 months, could be particularly strong, with some declaring it a “Godzilla” El Niño.

The UN has put out a global warning for the incoming weather pattern, which will increase worldwide temperatures and extreme weather. It will likely bring another year of record heat in 2027.

Due to the UK’s distance from the Pacific, the impact is less predictable but it will likely bring warmer and drier conditions during summer and increase the chance of colder winters.

It will also be impacted by rising food prices and shortages as crop failures will impact countries including India, Australia and parts of Africa.

Heatwaves set to become more common

Recent heatwaves come after last year broke historical climate records, with Met Office figures reporting 2025 as the warmest and sunniest year ever recorded for the UK.

It was also a notable year for its lack of rainfull, as the UK exerienced its driest spring since 1974.

This was followed by droughts across much of England and hosepipe bans in the summer due to high demand for water.

An attribution study by the Met Office indicated that thse record-breaking conditions are set to become more common in future years, as human-induced climate change has made the annual temperature of 2025 an estimated 260 times more likely.

The annual mean temperature for the UK at or above the 2025 level of 10.09°C is now predicted to occur around 1 in every 3 years.
