US President Donald Trump and his allies are pushing members of Congress to pass a resolution aimed at voiding his first-term impeachments, a White House official said on Thursday.
Trump was impeached twice by the US House of Representatives during his first four years in office. He escaped being removed from office in both cases, and his anger over the impeachments helped fuel his 2024 presidential election win over Democrat Kamala Harris.
“It’s no surprise that sane individuals are recognising these sham efforts and are interested in undoing those shameful actions,” said White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson.

The first time, in 2019, the House examined whether Trump abused his powers and sought help from a foreign government to undermine Democratic rival Joe Biden ahead of the 2020 presidential election.
In a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump is said to have asked for help investigating Biden and his son Hunter.
In the days before the call, Trump ordered advisers to freeze $400m in military aid for Ukraine – prompting speculation that he was holding out the money as leverage for information on the Bidens.
Hunter Biden served on the board of a Ukrainian gas company at the same time his father was vice president under Barack Obama.
Then he was accused of encouraging his supporters to march to the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, which resulted in the violent storming of the building while Congress was certifying the 2020 election results following his loss to Biden. Four people were killed.
Could he get the impeachments overturned?
A top academic says there’s a small chance that it could happen, but it would really just be a symbolic victory.
“A repeal of the impeachment vote might be legally possible, but it wouldn’t alter the original impeachment happening in the first place,” says Dr Carla Winston, a senior lecturer in international relations at Australia’s University of Melbourne.
“The actual practical effect of an impeachment by the House is to set up a trial in the Senate … but since the trial did not end in a conviction, there really is no legal effect to void or nullify.”
So why is Trump doing this?
Winston says Trump’s motivation could largely be about burnishing his presidential legacy before attention turns to the race to replace him in 2028.
“Trump’s approval rating is already near historic lows, and voters are not enamored of his other efforts to build his legacy,” she said.
“These include the destruction of the East Wing of the White House for a ballroom, illegally adding his name to the Kennedy Center, the proposed ‘victory arch’ in Washington DC and putting his signature and possibly face on money.”
