Sure, the San Diego County Fair and the Men’s World Cup are both off and running this week — but it’s far from the only thing going on around town.
From National City to Liberty Station, this weekend will see events spanning another wide slate of cultures, including both Juneteenth and Pride celebrations.
Friday, June 12
Kalayaan Pista: Presented by the Buy Filipino Network, this free event at the Southwest Lodge in National City (1140 B Ave.) will celebrate the 128th anniversary of the Phillipines declaring their independence from Spanish rule, with food vendors on hand, martial arts demonstrations, and a singing performance from Angel Ogapong, founder of the JAR Senior Club. The event runs from 6 to 11 p.m.
Saturday, June 13
Barrio Logan Verano Art Festival: Por Vida Cafe (2146 Logan Ave.) will once again be the site of a community gathering — not just an art show but a beer garden, live music, and more than 50 vendors on hand. The free event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
East Village Blues Fest: Entering its fifth year, this musical celebration at the Quartyard downtown (1301 Market Ave.) will have performances by San Diego Music Awards winner Chickenbone Slim, Robin Henkel and Billy Watson, as well as Zavala Sol and Len Rainey & the Midnight Players among others. Tickets cost $28.52 for the event, which will also feature food from El Comal in North Park. The show starts at 4 p.m.
Juneteenth — A Community Celebration: Community Actors Theatre (C.A.T.) will hold this free event at Gloria”s Mesa” Amphitheater in Chollas Park (6050 College Grove Dr.) from 10 am to 5 p.m.
Juneteenth Kickoff: Black Biz Flea Market and SoCal Barter will host more than 50 Black businesses from noon to 6 p.m. at this free event at 6785 Imperial Ave., as well as live performances and DJ sets, and art installations for visitors to enjoy.
Love Local in Fallbrook: The Fallbrook Winery (2554 Via Rancheros) invites you to join them as well as local groups like Bordeaux Buggy, Crust and Crumble Sourdough and the San Diego Flower Collective, for this free event from 2-6 p.m.
Queer Cinema for Palestine: Digital Gym Cinema (1100 Market St., 2nd floor) hosts this 60-minute program spotlighting short films from creators including Dua Omari, John Greyson and San Francisco’s Mama Ganuush among others. The screening begins at 5 p.m. Regular admission costs $13, while seniors and students pay $11.
Pride Market in Encinitas: The Mudd House in Encinitas (802 N Coast Hwy 101) will have more than 15 LGBTQ vendors on hand as well as free pottery workshops, free gender-affirming haircuts and more at this event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There’s no cost to attend, but organizers are asking visitors to RSVP here.
Sober Pride: The Collective Coalition and Alchemystic Studio present this event for folks who want to celebrate Pride Month without having to go into the bar scene. Instead, this wellness festival at the WorldBeat Cultural Center (2100 Park Blvd.) will include live entertainment including drag performances and a set by Oceanside’s DJ Jocelyn; a “vendors’ village”; and a beginners’ burlesque workshop. The event runs from 3 to 7 p.m.
Summer Arts Fest: Arts District Liberty Station will take over the area’s North Promenade (2848 Dewey Rd.) for this free showcase of artists in the area, as well as a giveaway for visitors 18 and over and live sets by DJ Chris Cutz, the High Tide Society and the Lucky Devils Band among others from 2-8 p.m.
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” in Vista: San Diego’s local RHPS troupe, Crazed Imaginations, ventures east from its regular haunt in Encinitas for a special early show at the AVO Playhouse (303 Main St.) — typically performances start closer to midnight, but here doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $15 and there are some rules to the Audience Participation experience, but the cast will explain … if you don’t mind that explanation being a bit spicy.
Sunday, June 14
Take Steps For Crohn’s & Colitis: The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation holds its largest fundraiser of the year at NTC Park at Liberty Station (2455 Cushing Rd.) — part of a series of events that the group expects to draw around 24,000 participants around the country, each of them living with the two diseases (collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD). The free event starts at 10 a.m.
